EDC Considerations

You can obtain a CCW permit here on Maui but only the Chief of Police will authorize the issuing of the permit and you better have a very good reason to apply for one. Normally from what I've heard, the CCW permit is issued to judges.

Common sense and good manners works well with other reasonable, law abiding citizens. But despite all that, there are still people (a-holes) that will push you to your limits and will corner you and eventually seek for your demise or cause you great bodily harm. Just recently in Honolulu a local dude was so severely beaten by three other local dudes that he had a heart attack and died. This was all over a traffic incident. The guy that died was on a bicycle and the other guys was in a car. From what I heard on the news, the murdered guy was a well like guy in the neighborhood. The guys that was in the car had priors.

Sure a knife shouldn't be carried for the purpose of SD. But what if... I guess we won't know until we are in that situation. It seems like from reading this thread the safe attitude is let the bad guys take advantage of you even though you are being beat up to the point of believing you are in mortal danger and never use deadly force because you are a law abiding citizen. I hope that I will never be in that situation that I had to choose to defend myself physically.

My apologies for getting off the original theme of this thread.

Actually, I didn't advocate letting yourself get beaten up to the point of believing you're in mortal danager. In fact, I believe I said "I'd personally draw whatever weapon I had on me and live with what may" (later). My main points were to spark some healthy debate and discussion on the considerations of carrying a knife and using it for SD. Just be smart and informed about it. Be aware, be smart, and smile alot! :)

I EDC Spyderco Dragonfly clipped to my front pants pocket. I work in an office environment. Don't want to scare my coworkers. I got a Blade-tech Mouse lite coming. It may replace the Dragonfly as EDC.

I don't think anyone is saying you should let yourself get beat up and not defend yourself.

Personally, if someone is going to try and fight me, and I have a knife on me, I will defend myself without the knife first. Killing someone with a knife during a fight will put me in jail, even if he started it. I would rather get a little brused than go to jail.

If my life was in danger, such as I was losing the fight and he seemed to want to do more than bruse me, or he had a weapon, then I would use the knife. And then, in most cases, I would not go to jail, since I used restraint until I felt I was truely in danger of being killed. I would rather kill someone with a knife and deal with the emotional and legal issues than be killed.

Like I said, I would only use a knife in SD if my other option is death. I will not use it just to help me win a fight. But I will also not let someone kill me, just because I didn't want to use my knife and maybe have to deal with legal repercussions. I would rather go to jail than die.

Since this thread was about EDC, I will answer.

I carry a Kershaw Spec Bump in my front right pocket, a Leek in my right rear pocket, and a SAK attached to my keychain in my front left pocket. I use the Bump for most of the rope & box cutting, the leek for smaller packages (or when a lot of sheeple are around), and the SAK for miscellaneous stuff.

I love the ergonomics of the Spec Bump. It just feels right in my hand. I love the leek because it is easy to control, its lightweight, and more socially acceptable. I carry it to church and don't worry about offending.

I just bought a Ti Bump and Kershaw centofante and will carry those once I get em. I'll post pics on those later.
