I am carrying a D4 FFG in VG-10 and have a 17 degree back-bevel and 20 degree micro-bevel. Im pretty new to sharpening and edge angles and was wondering how that setup sounds?

Would you consider it a more delicate edge or more of a working edge or balanced?

That's pretty close to what I usually use, I think you will find it to be a pretty good all-rounder. With VG10, you could go shallower, but it is not necessary.

I assume you mean 34 degrees inclusive and 40 degrees inclusive right?

I usually just stick with 15 degrees per side, especially with Spyderco's. They come that way from the factory so you don't need to do a lot of reprofiling.

Sounds good to me. I do 30° inclusive on nearly all of my folders, but anything between 30 and 40 is fine for most EDC folders and steels.

I have mine at a 38° inclusive, and it seems to work pretty well. Good edge retention, and I have it pretty well refined so I can get a very sharp edge. I meant for it to be 19° inclusive, I just didn't know how my sharpening system was set up.

Probably good that it ended up that way. :) Aside from a few steels like CPM-M4 that are known for their stability at very low edge angles, 19° inclusive would be an invitation to chipping if you cut anything other than very soft materials.

I may take one if mine back to 30° inclusive to see how it works out. I never use my knives hard enough to completely full the edge, so I should be fine.

Personally, I think that a 40 degree inclusive edge (20 a side) is a good angle for the average knife user. It should hold up to a decent amount of abuse, and it should be easy to maintain, or to achieve, from a factory edge.

I like to put 30 degree inclusive edge (15 a side) on most of my knives--as otherwise, I wouldn't be taking advantage of the properties of the steels I like to use. I even put my ZDP-189 Stretch at an ~25 degree inclusive edge. Crazy sharp.

I'm ham handed so I kinda chipped some knives that I had at 30* inclusive. Now most of the knives I carry are at 36/40(36 bevel/40 micro)inclusive. Except for my ZDP Endura which I have at 24* inclusive that I play around with.

+1.

i'll add: if your knife doesn't get used too hard/you cut softer material, closer to or at 30 is fine. if your knives see heavier use, closer to or at 40 would be better.

I usually go with 15, 18 or 20 degrees per side depending on the knife and intended use.

I use 15 degrees per side most of the time.

For edc folders I am around 12 per side, or 15 at most. Obviously, it depends on the use too, but I don't chop wood with my edcs...

I just took my CS Pendleton Lite from 50° inclusive to 30°, and the cutting performance increased tenfold. Total pain the butt (and my neck, I lean forward while sharpening) to reprofile it. Took about an hour, but now that the edge is refined, it is about as sharp as my Mora out of the packaging.

Do y'all use micro bevels? Or just one primary bevel?

I can't seem to get my knives sharp with the Lansky sharpening system without adding a micro bevel. I am perplexed
