Alright everyone; here’s the thing.

The day before yesterday, my sister, Amy, arrived at the trailer of an inactive member of her church that they’ve been trying to fellowship. This inactive member is such a stupid tweaker, redneck, trailer-trash ho that even I, who hate it when people stereotype small-town folks as worthless and stupid rednecks, can't help but be disgusted by her. Upon approaching this idiot’s yard, the woman’s bulldog/pitbull mix leaped out from under the stairs and attacked my sister viciously and without warning. We later learned this dog has a history of aggressive behavior. What it was doing running around loose is a crime. Amy, by the way, is six months pregnant.

She tried to run, but the dog charged her and bit her in the ass and knocked her to the ground. Then it got her in the side of the leg, and took a football-shaped bite the length of your hand out of the inside of her thigh. The surgeon who sewed her back together said that it was a good thing she gets fat when she’s pregnant, or we’d be planning a funeral right now. As it was, the extra padding prevented the dog from tearing out her femoral artery or getting into any tendons and ligaments. The surgeon said that it was the worst dog attack he's ever treated. Not to be gross, but to give you an idea of how bad it was, there were chunks of meat and fat left on her car seat after she called my brother-in-law to come rescue her.

It was too freaking close.

Now don't fret too much folks. She’s going to be okay, and so is the baby, although there was a lot of worrying for the last two days. Amy has hard pregnancies, and had a late miscarriage two years ago, so everyone was freaking out about the chance that she might lose this baby as well. But it’s all good so far.

My brother-in-law informed her that she was carrying a gun from now until the end of the world, and she isn’t arguing. But she also wants a fixed-blade knife to carry around just in case of another attack. So do my other four sisters now, who have learned their lesson about walking around without a weapon. I’ve only been bugging them for years to carry a knife everywhere they go, but only two of them ever listened. I got a lot of I Told You So’s out of this incident.

I’m trying to come up with a good EDC knife package for the average woman. While there are women who will dress around a gun or knife, they are rare and precious creatures. Most women dress how they want and if they do want to carry a weapon, will try to fit it into what they’re already wearing. My sisters are no different, although their tastes in fashion runs the gamut, from my delicate, model-gorgeous sister who packs a Spyderco Matriarch and always looks Hollywood, to the baby of the family, a (sadly) six-foot one, female version of me who totes a Cold Steel Gunsite folder and wears Boondock Saints and Schlock Mercenary T-shirts and wants a .44 for her birthday.

This knife system I want has got to be small enough to pass muster legally, and yet be large enough to easily and instinctlively grab and deploy in an emergency. An emergency could be anything from cutting oneself free of a seatbelt after a car accident to peeling off two and four-legged predators in a f***ed-up tangle. It's got to be able to do the job.

The sheath needs to be accessible with both hands, quick to draw from, and easy to put on and take off. My current EDC fixed blade is a Gryphon M-10, carried horizontally just to the left of my belt buckle in the excellent factory sheath. It’s accessible with both hands, invisible under an un-tucked shirt, and can be drawn so quickly and smoothly it’s like magic. I’m a big believer in the centerline carry, and will recommend this to my sisters, but I also want options so they can customize the carry method to their own needs.

All in all, this has to be a knife that my sisters will want to wear and not be an inconvenience. It also needs to be able to be easily sharpened on a Smith’s pocket sharpener. My sisters have no real sharpening experience, but a pocket sharpener needs little practice to put a decent edge on a knife with.

I also don’t have the scratch to spend a fortune on five knives, so it has to be an affordable knife package. Given unlimited resources, my choices would be easier, but I was born good-looking, not rich, I'm sorry to say.

So far I’ve narrowed the field to four choices.

First up is the ESEE Izula concealed-carry package. The Izula is a good design, and I like the narrow point for thrusting, but the sheath system doesn’t really do it for me.

I could go with a plain-jane Izula, but I’d have to replace the sheath with AZWelke kydex and buy the micarta scales.

The second choice is a Blackhawk Crucible fixed blade. The blade and handle are longer than the Izula, which is good, but comes at the expense of concealability. It comes with a decent carry system, too. It’s the most expensive choice of the bunch.

Blackhawk Kalista II. The Warncliffe design is a good one for self-protection, and would be instinctive to use. Concealable, too. Same carry system as the Crucible. I like this knife.

Finally, I just bought a BK-14 for myself, and I’m thinking of using this as the base for my Female Carry System. Only 7” long, easily sharpened, and tough. Legal to carry in my state, no problem. They’re inexpensive, although I’d have to add an AZWelke sheath and Tek-lok or belt loop, which is no hardship. I’ll also add the new zytel scales when they become available, and stipple them for enhanced grip retention. The Eskabar would also be good for everyday, mundane chores, so they might be more inclined to keep such a useful tool handy.

I think all four are good choices. But the question is, what would a woman be the most willing to pack around? Ladies? Your thoughts?

Personally, I’m thinking either the Kalista II or my Eskabar package, but I’m still not sold on any of them.

What say you, Beckerheads?

BK14, I got one for my woman (5'4" 120 lbs), she wears it always. Keep us updated on your sis and the baby .

I hope your sister heals fast, and everything is ok in the end. I hope the scum bag negligent dog owner gets whats coming his way. I carry an izula all the time. They make a bunch of colors that girls would love(and everyone), the bk14 is pretty much the same handle but a bit bigger blade. Being that this is a becker forum, I would recommend any of the smaller beckers, and for the price it's hard to beat. Whatever she decides to carry, make sure she is comfortable with it and gets some training.

Boker is selling Perrin's production La Griffe neckers now. They are designed to be worn on a paracord lanyard under a T-shirt.

Of those ones, I think I might take the Becker.

What about the Blackjack Model 155?

Its about izula size, but is made out of 154CM (so it would be less maintenance) and has micarta scales you can get for it. The swedge at the top should make it more stabby in case of another dog attack, and the blade profile will work great for EDC type chores.

Also, judging by your username and your description of the event, I'm guessing you live somewhere close by me.

I would think the Izula II should also be in the mix. The longer handle is definitely a plus in my book. You may still want to upgrade the sheath, but it does come with micarta.

have them go on youtube and search for knife videos by "limatunes" She is kind of a gun-toting conservative but she has some very imformative videos about carrying self defense weapons from a female perspective.

My nod would go to a Ka-Bar TDI. Easy to conceal, easy to deploy and easy to maintain a grip.

Hope she heals up fast and they throw the trash in jail. I really can't think of a smallish knife that I would want to use and go head to head with a pitbull. Something is better than nothing but it takes quite a bit of effort to kill a crazed dog with a knife like an Izula even if you can keep your wits about you while being attacked. My recommend is a Ruger Lcp.

I agree with skystorm. I don't carry a knife for self defense, I carry a Ruger LCP, while I may have many knifes on me, the most rapidly accessible weapon is my gun. Oh and of course training. I can recommend a couple of holsters too.

Glad your sis is gonna be ok, buddy. My wife carries either an Izula or an old Cammilus arclite necker.

Ditto for the kabar TDI. Perfect knife for what your looking for. Small, great sheath system, FAST deployment, agressive blade angle. Great product at a great price as well. Glad to hear your sis is gonna be ok

BK14, 11, or Kershaw Military. Teach her to go for the eyes, head, and ribcage. We don't want that dog wounded, we want it dead.

Pink Izula.

thats a crazy story man....hope everything turns out okay

Pink BK9 would be better. If I'm facing a dog I want as much ground between me and him as possible. Sounds like you got the gun route figured up. Remember the first rule of fighting a dog, you will get bit.

I'd choose firearms or pepper spray over any knife. My wife actually killed a rabid lab/shepherd mix with Sabre Red spray last year while she was jogging. Apparently, it inhaled enough of it to cause some sort of fatal reaction in the dog. The veterinarian that did the necropsy said he's seen several dogs killed with it over the years...primarily by mail carriers.

Edited to add: She was wearing her Darrel Ralph neck knife at the time, but wisely chose the spray instead of going toe-to-toe with a dog. Especially since we didn't find out it was rabid until the necropsy.

I'd say BK-11 or 14

But you know, I'm fairly biased. :D

Your sister will be in my prayers.

i'd prefer a gun to a knife for a defense situation, and TWO knives, one on each side... many choices i'm sure.

there's a number of good small guns that can fit in pocket and purse. heck. two guns. definitely something with alternating solid and hollowpoints, people have thin skin, some animals don't.

pepper spray lashed to the purse strap would be a good thing... spray the f*** out of it, then shoot it.

i hope legal action is going on with this "trash" you speak of, and i pray the dog is dead.

were it me and the dog was not dead yet? it might soon be. that shit pisses me off.

i hope the sister heals well, and fast too...

and to believe she was doing this for church work as well. geez.

Thanks for all the great suggestions, everyone. I'm taking a look at all of them. I think I will ultimately give my sisters a choice of several different blades and let them pick out what they like.

FWIW, I'm right on board with a gun being the best dog medicine, but it's always a good idea to have a backup plan. Personally, I'm trying to convince the girls to get their CCWs and training, as well as a good compact sidearm to EDC. But one thing I've found about facing off against aggressive dogs is that they'll usually keep their distance when you're swinging a blade at them. They back away and that will give you the opportunity to do the same. I've had to do this many times, and it has always worked for me. I think dogs instinctively understand to stay back when you flash your steel claw at them.

My female blade system isn't just for animal defense, though. It will also be a last-ditch tool for self-protection from human attackers and for general utility. I just want my family to be better prepared for anything. That way I don't have to worry quite so much.

Bladite, there is legal action being taken against the owner, mostly for the medical bills, which came to over ten grand. The dog is still alive, though. They have to keep it under observation for ten days to see if it had rabies, I guess. The dog's owner actually wants the damn thing back, so the city can't put it down without a court order. The Animal Control lady told my brother-in-law that they will be getting a court order to put the dog down.

It wouldn't matter anyway. The day of the attack, I talked to my brother-in-law and he told me about the dog situation. I told him that a court order didn't matter--the dog is dead no matter what. He laughed and told me that I had to get in line behind him, his brothers, his dad, my brothers, my dad, my mother, my other four sisters, his bishop, the Elder's quorum, every cop in town, the Animal Control lady, the doctor, and some guy he met in the waiting room who volunteered to do the deed on the spot. So there are people looking out for them, which is nice.

The real kicker was the absolute indifference this woman had about the whole thing. She just doesn't care. Not surprising for druggy, I suppose. It just goes to show that a dog is usually a reflection of its owner. She's probably been mistreating this dog for years, and it became aggressive and vicious as a result.

I appreciate the prayers and well-wishes, folks. I'll make sure Amy sees this thread.
