EDC Fixed Blade for Ladies

Also, judging by your username and your description of the event, I'm guessing you live somewhere close by me.

Well, judging by your username, I'm probably a couple hours away, in SLC. Looks like Flexxx is around as well. Nice to see some fellow Utards on board. :D

seems the right things are getting done...

a lot of people who do "door to door" always have a hand on at least pepper spray, until they know they're relatively safe... i wouldn't walk into a strangers yard without my hand on SOMETHING...

after this? ya know? i think i'm going to buy some quality spray and keep it handy in a couple places.

it pisses me off though that i can't carry this stuff in my neighboring state (which i visit a lot, and has more M***holes), nor other things. fortunately, i can keep gardening tools in the car :>

You know, I once had a conversation with Jim Keating about this very thing. He's a big believer in the awesome power of the Cold Steel Spetsnaz Shovel as a nice, low-profile urban battle-axe. I always have one in my car. For digging myself out of the snow and stuff, you know?

An Estwing framer's hammer also does the job nicely in this role. Plus, you can play hammer darts with an Estwing hammer. Those things are the best throwing implements I've ever used.

Not a Becker, but not bad for a tiny shovel.

Nice, I'm actually just under an hour away from you. Like you said, nice to see other utards around :p.

Also, I'm a big fan of the pepper spray idea for defense, and then the fixed blade for EDC and absolute last ditch defense.

And I realized that this thread doesn't have enough photos, and I didn't show the less common model 155 that I was recommending. So I'll fix both of these right now :).

Blackjack Model 155 Neck knife. 154CM blade, 4 finger grip, optional micarta scales, and it comes in pink, tan, OD, black and red. I just think that stainless might work better for a knife for "non knife people", as there is less maintenance.

and do not underestimate the utility of a SOLID walking/cane stick. esp something with a metal head.

i imagine that after recovery/PT a walking stick/cane will be useful and desired. keeps stuff at a distance, and some of them have pointy bits.

Pepper spray is a good idea. For whatever reason, I've always been hesitant on carrying the gas myself. But for walks around the neighborhood at night, it seems like a good idea. I think I even have a Kelly McCann video on using gas somewhere. I'll have to dig it up.

A cane or walking stick is a good idea, too. My whole life, when he goes out walking at night, my dad has carried around this length of carved hickory that he made in the boy scouts when he was a kid. It's his "walk softly stick." Mostly for intimidating any would-be attackers, but also to back up his Ruger Security-Six. I love that stick. It always symbolized the concept of Taking Care of Business to me. I hope my dad leaves it to me someday.

a walking stick or cane with spray ATTACHED to it :) that way, two for one.

absolutely, let the dog bit the end of the stick, and then squirt...

i'm of the opinion that dog owners should be held fully responsible for that kind stuff...

many areas have "a dog has its day" rule. allowed to be bad once. ripping up flower beds or terrorizing another pet kind bad. after that? two strikes, yer done.

attacking people? do not pass go... done. there's no re-habbing that. and me, an animal lover.

Kind of like a shark-stick for dogs. I like it.

BTW, I love dogs; they're some of my favorite people. But I'm not a fan of bad dogs, especially man-biters.

If I were you I'd find a reason to go there yourself (with nice thick tough pants on) for the church with a walking stick (it IS useful for many things), let the dog bite you, and bash its head in while it's clamped onto your leg. No dog that does that deserves to live in a civilian environment.

That said, I'm not a legal expert by any means, yada yada and I love my dog, she's a good hound.

i wonder if the "bacon maker" is legal to carry in your area? :)

were i worried about dog attacks as well, i'd probably also have gloves...

mmm... yeah, something i don't typically work about. usually it's sphinx. nasty things.

another vote for pepper spray -- the foam kind, because it's less likely to blow back in your face and sticks to what you spray with it.
also - check your municipal laws about collapsible batons -- pack down small, open quick & easy, and will drop a dog or other attacker if applied with intent.
for knife content, the BK14 with the upcoming zytel scales (2 sets of scales come in a package) and the TDI clip would not be a bad package.
for not much more, the Izula 2 comes with full length micarta scales.
another thought for low end would be the Buck Packlite - or a paring knife (Old Hickory or Opinel) with custom kydex sheath.

Buy her a BK14 and strip it and have it cerakoted pink and throw some kydex on it. Buy some ESEE micarta for it, and you will have a perfect women's EDC fixed blade. Blackjack 155 w/ micarta would be a great option too, so is the Izula. Maybe a Candiru would be a good EDC fixed blade, but its on the small side.

I hope Amy gets well soon, and everything is okay. I have never been a fan of pit bulls, this just made me scared of them. Good thing I carry a Becker!
Good luck,

Amy's doing fine. Thanks for asking, Orangish. She's recuperating at home now.

Of the blades I showed her, she wants a BK-14 done up just like I've done mine. I just got my BK-14 on Saturday. Man, I'm liking this knife. She's not really a pink knife kind of a girl. She likes all of my knives.

I did up a basketweave wrap for the handle and made horizontal belt loops for the sheath out of paracord. I've been carrying it just to the right of my belt buckle. Very fast and subtle on the draw. The blade is of course extremely useful. I cut stretch film with it all day, and then sliced up some ribs for lunch. One of the girls in the office used it to open a box after she asked me for a knife. She thought the cord wrap was pretty.

But...as much as I like the cord wrap, I'm thinking that instead of that or micarta scales for the 14, I'll go with the factory zytel when they become available and then stipple them. I stippled some grivory scales for my BK-5 this weekend and they turned out perfect. They're secure in the hand and look great, almost like the factory made them that way. All I'll need after that is some AZWelke kydex to round the carry package out. The factory sheath dulls the edge too much for my liking.

So far, one of my other sisters wants the bigger Ka-bar TDI. She likes how it looks and is used. I'll probably end up stippling the grip for her and getting a new sheath. I don't really care for the TDI belt clip. The one on my BK-11 is unsatisfactory, to say the least. I wish Ka-bar offered a plastic j-hook clip instead. Oh well, that's why they make custom kydex. :)

I'm sorry for this ordeal and just wanted to let you know that your family is in my prayers.

And to help you with the issue of helping them be more prepared I think the best solution is to get their CCW licenses (I envy almost every other state, I'm from CA and its practically impossible to get a CCW here it feels like) and take them to a range and try to make it fun for them and let them decide what gun they want to carry.

and BK 14 is a great knife!!! I hope they all find a knife they'll all use and enjoy.

Sorry to hear about ya sis..glad that she is alright. My wife (detective) and my sis (correction officer)..both suggested the pink Izula which I got them both for Christmas that just passed..but they disagree on handgun. My wife says get her a .45 while my sister suggests a .38

@Wasatchdan: I carry a Kalista with me all the time. Its great. I used to carry it IWB, kidney rear, but when I bent over, it would bend upward and out, showing some sort of handle sticking out of my back. Or my shirt would get caught on it, and I'd have to pull it down.

I've switched to my DIY merch-harness, which I really really like. I often wear a button up shirt, and it easily conceals. My only concern with the Blackhawk! sheath is the retention. Tip-up carry on the merch-harness, and 3 previous years of carrying it, allow it to drop out when I jump from something (be it a deck, or hopping a fence).

Why not check out the Ka-Bar TDI? While I don't own it, it looks pretty easy and awesome. Plus they seem to offer a number of training classes. And as NiceGuy525 tried to say theres a woman on YouTube (LimaLife) who shows her attending the classes (and she appears to be the only woman doing so) along with her thoughts on the class and the knife.

That being said, TRAINING is key. Sure, you buy a gun, you go the range, you dry-fire and draw at home. But when you buy a concealed fix blade, you twirl it in your hands a few times, and then it sits on the bureau. She's gotta train. And more importantly: 6th month pregnant woman should not go to trailer trash park homes and try to invoke Christianity on them. It often leads to hostility....which in this case it did...with a dog. She needs to start thinking smart.

I'm glad she's okay, and I hope the dog gets put down. And the owner should probably be ticketed. I'm not trying to attack her personally, and I'm sure it'll be the last time she ever goes into a sh**ty part of town again. I applaud your efforts to protect her. But when you give her the knife, make sure you follow it up with "Class is on ____ at _____." Otherwise, the already lacking in mobile woman she is is not going to be able to draw and slash as she needs to.

Good luck though! And please, let us know what she chooses (we've all got lady friends who we want to get into knives!) and let us know what training she partakes in! Best wishes.

My simplest knife and what I consider to be an excellent SD blade is the old sharpfinger. In a kydex sheath its fast to deploy.

When I read your post it was the knife that came to mind.
