Does anyone else consider EDC fixed blades a pain in the butt? I've carried my BK14, an Alan Davis, and a fixed Skyline as EDC's for a few weeks and when I get busy it's just so much easier (for me) to slide a OHO off of it's clip and re-clip it to my pocket, instead of having to get a fixie back into its sheath...on my belt...or in my other hand that's now responsible for holding the sheath. Not to mention it takes more effort to be discrete with a fixed blade. Now, if I'm out in the woods it's a different story.

Anyone else share my view?

That's exactly why I don't carry a fixed blade for normal everyday activities.
The folders are much easier to get out & back in (a pocket) without using two hands and/or slicing clothes.

I carried a small puukko (3-inch blade, 4 3/8 handle) made by Upi Anttila, of Fiskars, Finland for several years, as his sheath allowed one handed access and re-sheathing. Secure fit, but no retention straps to require using two hands to re-sheath your knife. After a very short time, I did not have to look, just reach back access the knife and when done re-sheath the knife. The big problem that i see with many fixed blade knives is the lack of a well thought out sheath. The other major problem is that in some counties in Washington, you cannot carry a fixed blade legally. John

Feel the same way. Except at work with a duty belt horizontally carry a bk11 on the belt. That works well for me. In regular clothes fixed blades can be a pain for me.

I like my Mora's sheath, just drop it in. Too bad more sheaths aren't as simple and functional.

I carry a folder and a fixed blade, folder for light tasks and a fixed blade if things get hairy. I figure the discomfort is worth it if I ever end up needing it. :)

Knives are meant to be comforting not comfortable.

Couldn't disagree more. I it isn't comfortable your not going to carry it. If it isn't on you it's a pretty useless tool. A knife is for cutting, not for comforting

The only fixed blade I've tried carrying day-to-day was an Izula. Actually pretty comfortable to carry around the neck, but definitely a pain in the butt to take out/use/put back compared with a pocket knife.

Couldn't have said it better, I carried my Svord Yeoman (seen below) for a solid 3 months and it did just dandy in the one hand sheathing/draw, even from pocket. Neck carry was just too much of a pain and it printed a little too much on my belt under a shirt.

I EDC fixed blades every day, never had an issue... You do have to change your whole mentality on how to carry a knife, pocket clip... maybe not... size it's probably going to be small (my largest is ~7.5").

I wear mine cross draw. You don't say how much other stuff you have on your belt, so that may not be an option.

I'm not saying you're wrong, but if you've decided to EDC a fixed blade changes will have to be made... What made you change? and what are the sizes of your fixies? So many questions... Also if you're concerned about the legality of it, stop doing it now... just stop. Anyways if you're bent on carrying one hit me up and I'll try to help figure something out... There are tons of options that you've probably over looked... When I made the transition it took me a while to get things sorted... a long while (a few months)

Oh and as for the sheath thing, those should be tailor made for your usage, I've only had two (2) that was usable from the maker. And even then one of them I stopped using (I wanted the use of my pocket back lol).

I EDC a 3.75" fixed blade everyday religiously, right back pocket behind my wallet,no trouble and no sheeple comments. I did however remove the scales and paracord wrap it,for flatness purposes.

+1 same story here. Love carrying my smaller fixed blade as an edc. Still carry a folder though from time to time.

It all depends on how you carry it. I constantly flip flop from folder to fixed depending on the mood I'm in when I leave the house. Never had a problem either with comfort or ease of use. I typically have a small fb at 4 o'clock. Kydex so the knife sits high on the belt line. No worries drawing or sheathing.

I don't have any issues carrying a small FB as EDC and I find it's easier and quicker to pull a FB, use it, and put it back than it is to get a folder out, open it, use it, close it, and return it. Plus, I don't have to worry about lockup dependability and dirt or lint blocking the lockup or pivot. As other have said, the sheath system and the mindset of having a FB instead of a folder are the two most challenging obstacles to everyday FB carry. Deal with those, and daily FB carry is usually not a problem anymore.

I do stick with smaller FBs. I like a 6 1/4" to 6 3/4" OAL with a 2 3/4" to 3" blade and the rest in usable handle. Alan Davis has made several for me and that's all I carry regularly anymore. I have an Izula for really junky work, but Alan's blades still get the bulk of my use. I use a combination of his crossdraw sheaths and Sharpshooter's pocket sheaths, depending on whether I'm in work clothes or a suit.

I don't carry a FB every day, but that's based on my needs, not difficulty of carry and there are days or weeks at a time when I'll have one of my EDC FBs on me wherever I go, warehouse, church, funerals, or grocery shopping.

I did, until I found a method that works for my Izula. In the stock sheath, sitting in the bottom of my RFP, handle up, with a piece of paracord tied to the sheath then tied in a loop over my belt. To draw, I just reach into my pocket, pop the sheath off with my thumb, and pull out the knife. To re-sheath, I put the knife in the other hand (left), grab the static cord with my right, draw the sheath out, and resheath, then drop it back in. It's a little unwieldy, but not too much once you're used to it, and I find the static cord is more discreet than any pocket clip.
Plus, in good old San Antonio, locking folders are a no-no, if a lightly enforced one. I prefer to be legal. And, you have all the advantages that come with fixed blades- faster deployment, better ergos, simpler to maintain and clean, stronger, etc. My advice is to try several carrying ways, eventually you'll find one that works for you.

My KSF pocket sheath and Becker BK11 go with me most of the time with no issues whatsoever. Resheathing is rarely an issue (unless I'm sitting down in my car or something, I guess).

I'm glad I read this! I've been on a quest for an edc fb. Turned the brkt micro canadian down because of the limited options with the sheath. Thinking of izula or rat 3 because of the limitless sheath carry options. Still up in the air. But I want a brkt so bad! Love the convex!
