wich one would you advice as an EDC knife? Need a super tough polyvalent knife. Something that can be used from opening a plastic bag to cuting a hole in a cardoor, and even SD. I wil get custom Kydex for belt carry or IWB

Can anyone post a picture of the two knives side by side please?

Thx

Sorry no picts.

I was just debating this about two weeks ago. I ended up purchasing the RD-4. I have no regrets. It is easily one of the best survival fixed blades around. Especially for the price. It is a great cutter. I took down a small tree in minutes. Handle is extremely comfortable.

As a knife for SD in an urban area, I would say there are better knives out there. It would certainly do the job but I like lighter knives for IWB and speed.

Going to get an RD4 or RD6 myself Mongo-man.

As an EDC, depending upon where you EDC it, at 10 1/4 inches long the RD4 may be too big. Probably a little much for on the bus on the way to work, or opening a bag of coffee for Debbi from Accounts Payable.

Whichever one I get will play the role of outside the city/SHTF in the city knife.

I have both. The RD 4 lives in my truck. It is a fantastic knife. In fact, both the RD 6 & RD 4 are fantastic knives!!

I have a custom RD5 & a TAK (1095). The Ranger definitely fits the bill for your needs, but it's a big & heavy knife. The TAK is lighter & probably a better CC knife because of its thinness & weight.

Personally, the best CC fixed blade I have, & use, is my RAT3 D2. It's definitely made for CC & their sheaths work. A little "boot clip" comes with it, which I use to carry mine IWB behind my back, & it comes with a TekLok.

I also have a MercHarness, but I haven't used that yet. Both knives are great choices. Have you thoght about asking Justin about his RD3.5? Someone on some of the knife forums (Don't know if it's on this one), has been trying to sell his custom RD3.5. Remember, Justin measures his knives from tip to end of the sharpened blade, not tip to handle edge like many other makers do. For example, my RD5 could be considered a 6 by others.

Anyways, good luck.

I have both; an RD-4 and a TAK-1 in D2. Love 'em both. For most everyday-type tasks, the TAK is a little handier. The RD-4 is a little more bulky.
But, if the "___ hits the fan", I'd rather have the RD-4 with me.
Sorry, no time for pics; gotta go to work.

Either is a great choice, I often EDC a Scrapyard SS4 and really like a small fixed blade except for those times it is not appropriate.
The RD4 can be had with all sorts of custom features like handle material or blade shape.
I also like the skelly Swamprats because they conceal really nicely.

Are you talking about this one? :

I am the proud owner of this knife. This thing is an absolute tank. Scott did a great job on this knife. I really like the modified tip. I feel like I can jam this knife into anything without worrying about the tip breaking.

I can't say about the TAK, as I've never had one, but rangers are fantastic knives. I've got the modified RD4 above and an RD9. These two are some of my favorite knives.

The RD4 will do that all. But it doesn't perform well as EDC. It's just too heavy. And I think the TAK-1 is too heavy also for EDC. Get a RAT-3, but don't forget, it's a lot thinner, and probably not bombproof like the RD4. But if you're determined to get out of a car, I bet the RAT-3 will get you out too, takes a bit longer maybe.(because it's lighter).

The RD4 might be small in length, but is as thick as the other: 1/4 inch.

If you're interrested in a Ranger EDC, you might ask Justin about a 3/16 TFI, would suit more. Or a RAT-3
