I recently turned 18 years old and I can now start carrying a fixed blade on my person. I was looking for something that I could do anything I needed it to, my plan c. I really like that design of the Tops Knives Fieldcraft Knife, but it does not have a sharp enough spine to use a ferro rod on. Anyone have any recommendations?

Any input is from anyone more experienced then my self is greatly appreciated!
Thank you!

Welcome to bladeforums!
You'll probably get some answers here, but also try using the search feature and you will find many threads full of ideas.
Also, I don't mean to put you off of Tops, but let me tell you one thing. I love Tops, and many of their designs. They were my first edc fixed blade. That being said, if I were to do it again I would look for something a little more "knifey". I got the Desert Fox, and while I love it, it's a great little blade, but I find that at least in my experience that Tops generally aren't very good slicers. Just my two cents, it's really up to you and what you want!

What do you plan on using your knife for on a daily basis? That will help direct which took is best for this job for you.

For me, the ESEE Izula 2 is the most perfect EDC fixed blade I've found. YMMV.

I edc an izula most days also. First make sure you know what is legal to carry. Second, even if it is legal, it's not a good idea to carry something that is going to freak people out. I like the izula because it's quite stout and small enough that it isn't frightening to non knife people.

Another vote for the Izula here, and you should also check out the Beckers. The BK11 and BK14/24 make for great EDC fixed blades or if you can get away with it in your area, the BK15/16/17 would be good too. For something in stainless, the White River Backpacker in S30V seems pretty decent too, although I don't have any experience with that one.

Esee Izula and Izula II are great choices. I just got a Bradford Guardian 3 that I really like...small enough for pocket carry but also has a belt sheath.

Thank you everyone for your input it had helped me greatly in my search. Right now I am kinda torn between the Becker BK16 and the Izula 2. I guess when the time comes it will come down to availability and money.

One more question though I could not find a "add to cart option" on ESEE's website. Anyone where it is or would I just need to order one from a registered dealer?

I get all my Esees from The Knife Connection. There are also lots of other great dealers who support this forum like USA Made Blade, knifecenter, bladehq, knifeworks, etc....

Here is a list of dealers who support this forum: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1089879-Paid-Dealer-Members-List

Here is a great thread with lots of pics of what others carry as a fixed around here:

I carry a fixed blade just about everyday. One in my rotation is the Esee Izula. It is a great choice but you won't go wrong with the Becker either.

Most any LT Wright knife, specifically the GNS. An awesome bushcraft fixed blade with one of the best 90 degree spines by a production knife company. A near perfect blade for any bushcraft or everyday task.

Check out an original DPx HEST fixed blade by Rowen.

Also, the new Gryphon M-10 FFG.

Great knives but not certain about the firesteel ability.

What size blade are you looking for? The Bk16 is significantly more knife than the izula. The 16 is my favorite knife to take out in the woods. If it were more socially acceptable in my area, I would probably edc the 16 too. However, around here it would probably draw some unwanted attention. Tough choice. Those might be my two favorite fixed blade knives, albeit for different reasons/purposes.

Should also mention that the bk14 or bk24 are nice compromises. Same handle as the izula, but slightly larger blade. My biggest issue with my 14 is with the sheath. I absolutely hate the plastic stock sheath. I really need to just find some decent leather or kydex it. But the knife itself is awesome. If you don't mind spending a little more for an after market sheath, I think it's a great alternative.

Any updates?

Interested to see how your choice played out. Especially because your top two contenders are so very different.

welcome

i like TOPS too...might want to try any of their B.O.B knives--they're nice and edc-friendly not being too heavy. also the Bark River Bravo 1 in 3v is phenomenal. the TOPS will run 120 bucks or so and the Bark River about 220...both very nice knives

You ever consider making your own? I carry a knife I made... right now it stinks of cilantro.

Tops fieldcraft knife is an excellent choice, the spine is coated, and not 90°. It wouldn't take much to file it a small spot thou, but near the tip is uncoated and sharpened for ferro use. An excellent edc knife is a bk16 w/kydex sheath, but would again need to file a small spot for ferro use.

The benchmade Bushcrafter has a incredibly sharp spine (it'll shower sparks) and is an excellent edc knife as well, especially slapped in some kydex.
