Hi Forumites,
If you guys would be given the choice between a folding knife or multitool as your EDC, what would you choose? Why? Pics would be appreciated.

I carry both and have done so for years. I love my Victorinox Swiss Tool. It outperforms the Leatherman, and all three of the Gerbers that broke doing tasks this one doesn't even flinch at.

EDC Folder is a Spyderco Salt 1 I rebuilt the body on but that changes from time to time.

Sorry, no pictures, but I edc both folders and a multitool.

I carry both usually. I've started limiting myself to just my Vic Soldier when I'm running out to get something really quick and won't really need to actually cut anything.

But usually I've got my old, original Leatherman in a pouch on my belt, the Vic Soldier in my left pocket and a folder of some sort in my right pocket (right now Camillus Heat, but my new Endura should be here Monday).

I could get by with either the Soldier or Leatherman, but would rather have a locking blade (it's rare but I do occasionally have to do some pretty heavy duty cutting), even though the blade on my Leatherman is scary sharp.

I carry both, a Leatherman Wave and a folder, at this time that happens to be a Benchmade 550. But, if I had to choose... I would take the wave. I work as a tradesman/mechanic and have alot of uses for the Leatherman. :D

I have been down this road so many times. I have carried a large locking folder for a while, I carried a Leatherman Wave for a while, I carried a SOG Powerlock for a while, carried a small locking folder for a while, I carried a small slipjoint for a while and I carried a few different SAKs for a while. I have also tried carrying both knife and multitool but that doesnt work at all for me and never has lasted more than about half a day. I don't usually carry stuff on my belt. Multitools go in my pocket 90% of the time. I just recently got a pocket clip for my Wave though and that works well too.

So, after going through all these different EDC blades/tools over the years, what would I choose? I would (and do) choose to carry only a single large locking folder. I dont work in a proffession that makes a multitool any more usufull to me than the avergae Joe so that is not a factor. While I realize that in the urban jungle that I am forced to live in there is much benefit to a multitool, I just cant seem to justify the extra weight and bulk. Multi tools have flimsy blades compared to my EDC folders (Sebenza and Ritter Grip most recently) and though the tools on the multitools are handy, they just arent deployed often enough to justify the extra weight and bulk. The Wave and SOG PL both weigh about twice what my Sebenza weighs and the Ritter Grip is even liter than the Sebenza. I like my pants comfortably loose in the waist and just dont like the extra weight pulling on them.

Like many have said, if I had to choose one, it'd be a multi(Leatherman Charge Ti, for me :D ).

Just because it has all the tools.

But then there's a weight issue, and a not so lefty-friendly issue to it. And thus my EDCing of folders.

I carry a folder, generally a pretty heavy-duty folder, like a Sebenza or Strider, or a MOD, or lately one or two Spydercos I'm playing with. But since I got a Leatherman Blast, I've been carrying that on my belt everyday.

It is light and compact for a full-featured multitool and if I run out without a folder, I don't worry about it as long as I've got the Blast with me. Before I got it, I carried a Victorinox Ranger for backup.

I carry a SuperTool 200 and a Buck (either a 110 or a 112 - both have been re-fitted with BG-42 blades). I use them both. I would really like an option for a supertool without a knife blade because I much prefer my Bucks.

i carry a std leatherman and a juice in my bag, dont carry on me though, also have a SAK ranger i the bag, i can always get them out when needed, dont use them that much myself.

carry a spyderco Ti ATR PE right now mostly, also a emerson CQC8 specwar or MT makora occasionally.

If I was limited to one, it would of course have be the multi tool. Mine happens to be a LM. It has a good enough folding knife, anyway.

Unless i'm outdoor living, my multi tool is used at least 4-6 to 1 over the knife. So the choice would be clear to me.

Incidentally, the latest pouch is also handly on the new LM. I've my new piece about 2 months and it has three small sections seperate from the main tool. The two side pouches are stretchy and have grab lugs. I carry a pair of Regine 1 tweezers and a stubby oval carpentry pencil in one and an Arc torch in the other. These are well used, too.

Having said that, I EDC both the multi tool and knife religiously

Could you imagine going out without your knife

I often carry both, (LM Wave - old & Endura), but if it is only one it is the LM. (I plan to upgrade to the Charge soon.) I find the tools used often enough, and the blade adequit around town. The backcountry is a different story though.....

I always have a multi-tool and a blade on my belt. Lately, I've made changes in my EDC which I've explained in the Multi-tool Forum. Anyway, I now have a Leatherman Wave (original or 2004) and a Schrade Old Timer (OT6 or 8) depending on if I'm at work or home :)

I EDC a Spyderco Calypso Jr. and a Prybaby sometimes if I think i'll need it ill take a SOG CrossGrip.

Seeing how light you all apparently travel, I now see I'm a nut case. "Be Prepared" taken to the n-th degree.

Although I am the "fixit" guy in our office, I am starting to wonder.

Just look at all this crap!!!

The Blackout is for "beater" chores, sometimes an MT L.C.C. rotates in there. the Godfather is for AP emergency in case the Taser isn't enough or is lost, the UTX-70 w/neck sheath is the Godfather backup.

You folks worried about an extra ounce or two need to gain about 25 to 50 pounds. After that, a couple extra knives is just nothing. :D

I usually carry a folder as well small Wenger with some tools.
If I'm going to any place I think I will need more tools I take my LM Wave.
