I have looked around at some threads and couldn't find exactly what I was looking for so I decided to ask.
Looking for a knife that is under $120 with the following specs.

Assist
plane edge
2.5"-3.25" blade
S30V or better edge retention/ corrosion resistant
relatively compact

I already own a Native ( broke the clip which was not designed robustly). I have been considering a BM mini-barrage or griptilian/ grip mini. Eventually I want to get the Barrage 581 but can't bring my self to spend that much right now.

Does anyone have advice?

College? I'd suggest a relatively simple folder that won't matter too much if it gets lost or confiscated.

I think an SAK with bottle-opener would be the most useful in college (worked for me!)

This is what i carried on campus too, usually paired with a spyderco dragonfly. When I moved off campus I carried a benchmade 707 which I found to be an excellent little edc. Keep in mind that in the dorms, doors get left open, you'll wall down the hall and your roommate will leave the door wide open when he goes to take a leak. An expensive knife sitting in your desk or dresser will disappear more often than you like.

My suggestion would be something like a spyderco delica ffg or benchmade mini grip and a SAK and then pick up a nice leatherman or other multitool with the extra dough. You'll probably want a good LED flashlight as well. If your experience at college is anything like mine, youll use a multitool FAR more than you'll ever use any dedicated single bladed knife.

Contact Spyderco for new clip for your Native. If you can carry a 3" knife, you won't do much better. If you want an assisted opener, a Kershaw Drone has about a 2 3/4" blade and is very well made for a sub $30 knife.

There is little need for a knife on a college campus. Anything nice is likely to disappear. I highly suggest you avoid assisted openers and just get a swiss army knife.

In my college days I carried a Vic tinker and a Cold Steel large Voyager. Wore both of them out! The voyager has so much play now and tinker has a scale missing. This was before I really got into blades do it was all I had at the time.

Muller MSP backlock S90V steel, 3 inches no thumbstuds, perfect F@F,you can get them online directly from a custom knife maker from Germany with shipping for around 140 $ total.Excellent EDC knife.Definitely worth checking. www.mueller-messer.de

If being non-threatening is a priority, put a Manbug on your keychain and get a Victorinox Classic or Mini-champ. Those the knives. I prefer to use these knives on campus. They don't scare rational people and are useful for the sorts of things you will do on campus.

+1 on all points. Why would one possibly need assisted opening on campus? Tacticool-ness isn't needed....simple functionality is.

Yep, I'd go with the SAK option too. Otherwise, Boker Plus do some good small folders that won't break he bank if they're lost/stolen/confiscated.

Endura + SAK or multi-tool is what I usually carried in college.

If your school allows knives: Kershaw Blur S30V ($85), Kershaw Blur S30V Blem ($55), Composite (13C26 spine, CPM-D2 edge) Kershaw Leek ($75)
If your school does not allow knives: Victorinox Spartan ($20), Leatherman Skeletool CX ($50)

Also, why assisted?

My college didn't allow knives. I carried a SwissTool. It might not be what you're looking for right now, but I've kept that SwissTool and it's always been useful around the house through the years since college.

I would respectfully disagree. There could be as much or more need for a knife on campus as off campus. And, as to having something nice, that depends on the responsibility, vigilance, and financial situation of the owner. The only problems I see with an AO is related to the community and campus' laws/regulations and the possiblity of scorn from sheeple. All that said, I do think a SAK is a great campus tool.
