What do most of you carry knives for, protection, box opening, letter opening? Just want to get a feel for what people carry their knives for. Thanks!

Mostly my high tech EDC gets the job of opening boxes:D

My job doesn't require it and I can't carry it there anyway...once I'm in the military, I think it will have more use.
:)
Warthog

Utility purposes ;)
I really don't know any martial arts and I've yet to get any training......

I guess that your answer could be summed up in this phrase,

"Best to have a knife and not need it, than to need a knife and not have it." :D

Well, lets see...I carry my Cold Steel Vaquero Grande when I feel the need to scare the shyt out of sheeple.:D. I carry my FRN/PE Spyderco Delica as my "utility" folder. I carry either my Spyderco (serrated) Massad Ayoob or the PE Police model (that I should receive tomorrow from a recent trade :)) as my defensive folders. I also carry my SOG PowerLock and SOG CrossCut just in-case I might happen to need a tool of some sort. Sometimes I even carry one of my SOG Tridents (when I'm un-able to carry one of my Glock pistols).

I'm in knife retail, so I carry my frn endura, and ss full serr endura to show to coustomers. other than that, the most action the blades see is cutting cardboard, and the ocasional camping trip.

General utility purposes and for self defense should the need arise. Oh and its fun to whip out a knife and start opening a pacakge or something and have people go oh whats that or look at you funny.

Hmmm. I suppose every knife nut is asked by someone at some point, "Why do you carry a knife?" My reply to get a reaction from people are:

1. 'Cause I'm not allowed to carry a gun. ;)
2. I like sharp, shiny, and dangerous stuff.
3. I'm required by my religion. ;)
4. Remember what happened to that Tom Hanks guy in Castaway?...
5. I have issues...;)

Here's the real story: I started carrying one for self-defense purposes (better safe than sorry). Admittedly, I use it more for utility cutting: string, paper, packages, even the odd really tough steak...

Now I just carry it like I wear a watch. But I've always been fascinated by the knife ever since I was a little kid. It's one of mankind's oldest tools. It's simple, it's utilitarian, and fun, fun, fun!

Cutting boxes, tape, food prep, prying paint cans open (with my BM722), material, weeds, light overhanging branches, thorn bushes, stems of flowers, fileting a fish, rope, nylon, scraping away at silicone in the old bath tub etc etc etc...there's more but thats all I can think of now.

I don't really carry with SD in mind but after the Gunting seminar maybe I will be more self-defense minded.

Somehow some of the chaps at the Computing Science Common Room can't seem to understand why a compuer lover would like to have a multitools (SOG PowerLock), and of course I don't show my knives to most people except people who I know I can trust.

I also work in knife retail, carrying my lum chinese folder, military, bm350, dyad jr,spydie goddard, and ss police. I usually have these knives on me or in my bag to show ppl.

I carry knives for convience sake.I do not carry for SD but if it came down to it and my knife was needed, I would not hestitate to use it.

I carry a knife because no matter how hard I try I can't cut things with my pen or my comb. I use my EDC to cut everything that needs cutting and that is way too many things to list.

Thinking back over the last two days...

opening letters and packages, chopping vegetables for our parrots (5 of them...they eat a lot!), opening those little packages of nicorette gum (wife and I quit smoking, I don't have long enough fingernails to pry the darn things open), cutting hose for fish pond, stripping wire for a new light fixture, removing screws for a computer case (Leatherman Wave!), cutting up snack food (carrots, cheese, etc.), cutting a splinter out of my left index finger, cutting jute, sharpening a pencil, opening paint can for my son (again, the Leatherman), scraping dried parrot poo off of a calcium block (yikes!), helping son cut up some foam core board for a school project... probably a few other things as well!

- Ever try slicing a bagel with the plastic knives they give you at the donut shop?? My EDC goes through it like a hot knife through butter.

- Apple or orange at lunch, also peeled/sliced with EDC.

- Opening mail/boxes etc...

Thats just everyday type stuff, plus theres always odd things that come up that my knife is used for. (use imagination here) :D

I carry I knife so that I can cut stuff up.
Some stuff I've cut just today:
Pizza, the pizza box (for easy disposal), those plastic tag-holders from new clothes, tape, a couple of zip-ties, and several plastic packages.
And it's only noon!

Good luck,
Allen.

I didn't see this movie in the theater and just saw it recently on video. Did anybody notice that he used an SAK several times in the beginning of the movie? It was attached to his keys, which he gave to his fiance just before taking off on the ill-fated flight.

To answer the question - for work, for household chores, for my outdoor hobbies, for everyday conveniences, and to be prepared for emergencies.

Actually, that's what I was implying. Having that knife saved his life!

To paraphrase the doctor on "The Simpsons" -- "Don't thank me. Thank...the knife!" Bart's response, "Aw. Everyone's having fun with knives..."
