Hi Forumites,
What would be your essential EDC during the times of emergency situations like in a hurricane evac or after an earthquake?

BlueToOrange :)

Give me a multi-tool (Leatherman Wave or SwissTool) and maybe a larger folder and I'd be good to go ;)

I carry an "urban" sort of kit in my daypack, while if I had warning I would prefer a fixed blade, my kit knives are:

Benchmade 732 Axis lock
Victorinox Craftsman SAK

I always have a Leatherman Wave and LED light with me on belt, plus a SAK on belt also. A larger 4" folder is always clipped in the RFP. Those are items that are always there. My truck always has a 18" or larger Khukuri in it along with a folding multi bladed saw and an old folding Entrenching tool. Those are always in the truck along with assorted tools and such. Those tools would take care of any chores like that.

My regular EDC should be sufficient, but I would probably add a medium fixed blade (5-1/2" Dozier Texas Six) if I had some warning.

My usual carry includes a Camillus Aftermath, a Victorinox Crafsman, and a Victorinox Spirit.

Cell phone, extra battery.

An axe, a good flashlight, a shovel, a saw and a prybar (all of which I keep in my car) are att he top of the list. On my person a good multi-tool, a sturdy folder, and if permitted by law or circumstance a large fixed blade knife.

Also, first aid supplies, food, water, candles, blankets, etc.

See, for example this set of articles:

I like the looks of the Chudzinski knife in the article, but would prefer something more substantial, i.e. Ranger series, Swamp Rat, etc for this very specialized circumstance.

If I were preparing for the worst I think I'd go with:

multi-tool or SAK with a saw.
a large (3.5"+) folding knife
a small (4-5") fixed blade
cell phone with a good charge
portable radio with batteries
a good flashlight with batteries
water
some non-perishable food
heavy duty plastic tarp or surplus tent halves (you may need quick shelter)
blankets
100 feet or so of paracord for lashing shelter or making a line for family members so you don't get seperated and to keep your gear off of wet ground

All of this could easily be carried in a medium sized backpack.

My normal EDC currently is:

Photon II
Mini Bic
Large Regular Sebenza

In a hurricane or similar disaster, if given a warning, I would add:

Inova X5 w/ Extra Batteries (currently residing in my vehicle)
Leatherman Wave (currently residing in my vehicle)

While it would also be tempting to strap on a nice thick a 5.5" fixed blade like my CRK Shadow IV (which is perfectly legal to carry where I live) I imagine I would 'probably' end up not adding EDC it due to the excess weight.

I've Been thru earthquakes and worst case I could get away with the multitool and EDC that I'm carrying that day. If I had time then I'd grab my camp ax.

1. Sebenza and Surefire (wi extra batterys)

or

2. Nimravus Cub and Photon (s)

Haven't had too many disasters here... but the bombings in London 2 days ago made me rethink my local strategy.

Being a total boy scout, my Leatherman Wave with Photon Microlight II attached, never leaves my belt. But in terms of a knife for EDC, it would be whatever folder I happen to have clipped to my pants at the time. Usually a Spyderco lockback like my Calypso Jr, Wayne Goddard model or Native in S30V.

Emergency kit under the bed with full evacuation kit in a small carry suitcase - complete with a little cash, packaged food, passports etc. I only just finished making myself a heavy duty Bowie with 8.5inch blade that can chop, smash, pry for outdoor and some potential SD use as well. Its gotta be super super strong and its probably gotta be heavy, which can only mean - FIXED BLADE.

My ideas for "disaster" survival knives is very much like a camping / hunting knife selection issue - a large heavy knife and a smaller belt sheath knife combo works nicely for me. Thats if I have the luxury of choice when the time comes.

I'll stop now. Jason. :D

Whatever else I might pack,I think a Becker BK-9 or something similar might come in handy.

Definitely a strong multi-tool like the Leatherman Super Tool 200 or the Victorinox SwissTool.

Go with a fixed bladed knife if you can. Fumbling around in high wind, at night, in a wet environment is a good way to get hurt. Do whatever you can to simplify the process such as eliminating a mechanical locking mechanism. During an emergency, medical asistence can be further then you are use to. Relax and try to avoid doing things that can get you into trouble.

For me the most useful items in the aftermath of a storm has been a machete and an axe. Both, of which were use to remove debris from the property.

I always EDC a leatherman tool, a stout folder , a good lighter , and a long running LED lite . My present line up is a Charge Ti , a Strider Pt , a Zippo , and a McLuxIII-PD ( new superlite - 42 hrs runtime on low , 60+ lLumens on Hi ) .

In my BOB I have a CRK Aviator , and a Grafors Burks hatchet , and a old model wave , and a couple of DMT difolds .

My previous folder of choice was the Benchmade 520 .

There has been considerable discussion of this in this thread on the excellent British Blades forum.

One of our members was actually on one of the Tube trains that was attacked. Luckily, due to rush hour, she couldn't board the carriage that was devastated and entered one two or three cars back...

It can happen to you.

What I EDC normally.

On my person: Large Classic Sebbie, Busse 3.5-5" FB and a ARC AA on keyring.

In Workbag: SRKW Camp Tramp, Howling Rat. Elektrolumens 3W 3D, another ARC AA on neck chain and a Leatherman Supertool. Other tools and knives as needed, but these are constants.

The workbag would also serve as a BOB come to think of it. There is also first aid stuff and fire starting supplies in there.

My biggest concern isn't hurricanes (they don't sneak up on you), but going into a canal, which we have plenty of. Thus the Busse on the belt. Yes, I also have escape tools and center punches, but don't want to rely on just 1 of anything.

good choice but i would add a surefire , say a 6P of E2e , a shed load of 123s,a whistle and a handkerchief or scarf and a firstaid kit if you have room , i always carry in my coat or jacket a sterile dressing , steristrips and a silver survival blanket , i dont find these take up much room but in the summer when its too hot for a jacket then its not always possible to carry all this , im thinking about getting a bum bag (fanny pack? ) any suggestions .

I'll use any knife that can open a can of beans and perhaps create a spark to start a fire.

Seriously, take a look at the Microtech Mini-SoCom Elite model "MSE-SC". It is a real McCoy emt blade. It comes with a seatbelt cutter and window breaker knob. Extremely solid as one would expect. It is 3 3/8", S60V steel, anodized aluminum handle.

That an a nice M9 bayonet (army uses this) would be everything needed in knives for an emergency.
