Working on an EDC Kephart handle at the moment, having a lot of fun with it because it's been way to long since my last Jk or handle job, this makes my fourth handle so I'm a bit behind the curve of most of you guys here but this one was a chance to pull a few different things I've learned together and use a few new tools in the lineup.
I've had the idea of an edc kephart with burled wood and a mosaic pin for a while now, before I tried rehandling a knife at all. it was just one of those images that comes to mind that got stored somewhere in my head. being me I had to draw it out and alternatives. I'm shooting for the middle fella:
I was going to use some walnut burl I had from my LRK project but ended up deciding on this rosewood you may remember. (One of the "new tools" I'm using is a coping saw, not big news to anybody but me, found it very responsive if a little forearm tough after a while
) A lot easier then a dremel cutting wheel, less reckless and a whole lot better then a couple of extra hours hand sanding down to this far.
Been thinking about staining the wood, whcha think, light or dark?
I've also been playing with the knife end of the handle contours and after seeing sitflyer's WIP thread on the baby CBK I decided to do a sitflyer inspired version.
I have a little more to do to it at this point (a lot of it done already but i didn't take the camera with me last time!) But I'm going to work on the top side contour on the front a little and work the overall blanks down closer to the knife. (New tool alert
:I finally set up a drill in a vice with a sanding pad to make that part go easier.) Right now I'm waiting for the money to buy the pin stock before I can do more. I like to "round" the handles quite a bit and while dangerous to the metal I simply fine it easier to shoeshine it in after it's been glued up. I might glue it now if I had temporary pin stock, instead two 1/4" allen keys have been helping me out
I'm worried about overworking it before I get the pins in and glued. I'm not good at waiting after I get started on something. Hopefully payday will come in sometime soon
This thread kept me out of trouble for another couple minutes, anyway, so I'm that much closer
