EDC knife for girlfriend?

Something solid and handy.

She's a difficult person to deal with...
This is getting ridiculous. I wouldn't sink anymore money or much more time into this. Sounds like she has something right now that fills the role she wants.

Flashing a knife around that is illegal to carry (she is not reasonably carrying it as a tool no matter what you or she thinks, sorry) is something to stay away from. Throwing knives not meant for throwing. Not listening to reason. Sounds like something to stay away from IMO.

You already said you are not long term invested here so give her the advice you have and move along.

I swear the OP is a re-roll account of the Smiling_Larry guy who started an epic thread a few years back arguing that Lynn Thompson is the greatest knifemaker of all time, even if he has never personally made a knife.

Not sure your price range, or if orange is the top go to choice, but for $129.99 there is a pretty nice Buck exclusive, full flat ground D2 blade w/ micarta handle 104 Compadre dubbed the "Frontier" at SKblades, inspired by the forum here on bladeforums...

TM Hunt Mogua comes in a bunch of different cool handles, o1 steel would be tough to break, but they are also in the $200+ range

Bark River has a plethora of options, designs and handle materials; most are over the $200 mark, but many of the models available in a2 steel are under $200..

Lionsteel b40 runs about $160 in Sleipner

Knives of Alaska Elk Trekker (or Pronghorn hunter) is a nice smaller 3.25" knife available with an orange handle and nice leather sheath for <$100.
They do a pretty good job with their d2, so yet another pretty tough steel to break, although "only" about 0.12" thick.

Even a bit smaller, Knifeworks has an orange Izula knife with od green micarta handles.

Just a few more names thrown into the ring for your consideration...

Ridiculous indeed.
First of all, unless you are an attorney, your knowledge of the law is wrong. The judge will be happy to explain the law to you in spite of what you think. Believe me, this is the worst sinking feeling you will ever have.
She likes to flash her knife around, pry with it, throw it and keep her hand on it when she thinks she might stab someone. Sounds like too much Rambo to me.

Dear god, do not buy her any of these nice knives. She will trash them.

Lol, I just skimmed the post before replying, mainly looking for key parameters like price/size, but didn't take note to her wrecklessness... Honestly though, financially supporting a decent and reputable maker, I could care less what she does with them after the purchase, and maybe, just maybe, with a nice quality knife, she might learn to have a little bit more respect for it?
Maybe not, (probably not, esp. if it's not her money), but maybe... Just maybe...

I think best case scenario is a cop ends up with a nice knife, so not all bad I guess!

I would say have a look at DPX GEAR hest, hest 4 etc! Solid knives and a prybar on the.other.end!! This pic below is my hest II assault. The one in the middle!IMG_20200507_054642.jpg

I agree that it’s getting ridiculous. Based on what you’re sharing with us, she doesn’t seem to have a concrete choice of knife yet. Why the need to have to trade with your friend? Just get the knife you want directly.
She wants to have the knife he has, but she also doesn't want to have the same knife as someone she knows, so she decided to just trade with him...

And why are they choosing knives with crazy colors is beyond me...

Plus, she's buying the knives with her own money.

I agree she's kinda crazy. We'll soon be splitting ways anyways since she's about to migrate.

I'm not her parent, and I can't make rules for her.
I made this thread so I can give her an advice, but I know she'll still probably do everything on her own.

My wife carries a blue Blur in her purse. Her decision has a lot to do with it being "pretty". Thankfully, it's a decent knife and she doesn't abuse it.

Women sometimes make decisions based on things that I don't understand. That's okay. I accept it. Just get her a knife that will make her happy. Maybe do some online window shopping with her, cruise reviews together, etc. It could be a fun couples' activity, even if your time together is limited.

You can hopefully preempt any abuse by also getting her a small pry tool. Just a guess but you can probably find a pretty one in anodized titanium or something.
