EDC Knife Reccomendations / Ontario Rat 1

You would be amazed just how much you can get done with a utility knife/box cutter.

Personally, I think knife noobs should start with a few basic knives. First, a basic SAK. Second, some sort of budget fixed blade. Third would be a modern budget folder of their choice. Number four would be the utility knife mentioned above. The last one would be a decent multi-tool. Use those five for a while and then start building a collection.
But why would you want a collection?

I just received my Rats yesterday, I have used one for some kitchen chores and can easily say its the sharpest blade I have. The Rat 1 can do much more than the 2, but it is much larger than what I had anticipated, not huge but not a small knife. When I am about to make a new blade purchase I do the same ritual. I grab a tape measure and pull out the tape Blades closed length to see how big it will be. However it does not tell the whole story. I think I prefer the Rat 2 but there is plenty of opportunity for the R1's. Good luck with your purchase whatever you decide!IMG_0134.JPG

Fixed Blades are illegal to conceal carry where I live. A simple folding knife is much safer as well. Why would you think otherwise?

Jesus, guys... The guy want's a damn knife for work, he isn't 7 years old, and he doesn't need to learn some silly philosophy.

OP, the RAT series is the best bang for the buck you're going to find. Buy it, use it, be happy. The end.

Pro-tip; if you ask for advice around here, expect to be more confused afterwards. :)
Haha, yeah the advice is accross the board but i've gathered what's useful to me.

Its a great knife, I do not like the weight of it nor do I like the scales. They are kinda slippery when wet. That real steel as someone noted is a great option RealSteel H6 S1. Although I think d2 is excellent and people often relegate it to a "lesser" steel. I find it holds and edge much better and is easier to sharpen than s35vn s30v vg10 and is about on par with 154cm, maybe slightly better edge retention yet less of a stainless than the 154cm. All good things.
The best edge retention and ultimate cutter in my experience and stated from spyderco's owners. THe h1 serrated steel is the ultimate. I would go for a dragonfly over any other knife to be honest. It cust and cust and is just a beast. Super light weight and just perfect.

^^^ Except it's too small for most, myself included.

My Delica is the knife I grab most, and here it is w/ my brother's RAT 2. He's had it a few years and still really loves it.

I can't stand the looks of spyderco knives. Just a personal thing.

.
Fixed blades are actually much more safe than any folding knife on the planet......And you could carry it in your vehicle depending on what state you live in.

Concealed fixed blades are illegal where I live, but I always carry fixed blades in my truck because it is not illegal to do so.

Concealed fixed blades are a no go for me also but, that does not mean someone can't use one. Leave it in the trunk of your car or maybe in your toolbox. Just don't carry concealed.

I don't find a pair of pliers particularly attractive, however, they generally do what they're supposed to do. ;)

Isn't it great that the OP ISN'T looking for a pair of pliers?
There are many great & varied design choices when it comes to folding knives for EDC. The RAT 1 is a fantastic choice in either available steel.

BTW. I love the ergos and utility of Spyderco, but I sold of gave away almost all of mine, because I think they are damn fugly and I didn't carry them much.

I can t use a knife that s not pretty!

Wait. The thumb hole is the best way to manually open a folder.
M390 and cts 204p sreels avaiable in well made, sturdy , relatvely well priced knives. I might just keep a couple of Spydercos.
