OK everyone I am thinking about a new knife for everyday carry I have been carrying a benchmade AFCK for nearly 10 years and it has done very well for me. I am starting to think, after spending some time around here absorbing what I could, that I would like to have something that cuts and slices better but mainly something that does not scream TACTICAL. I don't mind carbon steel and would rather have a blade that locks, about a 3" blade or a bit smaller, 200 dollars or less, a nice gentlemans knife that is also tough enough to work with.

OK, everybody let me have those suggestions, it is almost christmas time and I need to know what hints to drop. ;) Chris

I'd be a poor one to offer any sugestions, as I've gone back to my early stuff from the 1950's. All my folders are traditional types like three blade stockmen, sodbusters, and saks, with a sprinkle of European working knives like Opinels, Okapi's, and Douk-Douks. I back those up with a 12 inch Ontario machete or my English Martindale golok.

My traditional pocket knives handle 98% of my cutting needs, and the small machete does the rest. And I've taken out my pocket knife in public to cut a bagel or something and nobody is freaked out. I guess a stag handle eye-brand stockman or an Opinel is not too threatening.

You may not like it as its not a lock blade . For the price I cycle mine in the E:d:C shuffle. Its a Sodbuster. Made By Kissing Crane knives of germany. Good carbon steel. Sharp as you can make it. The spring holding it open is practically a lock. They sell on ebay all the time. There is even one that offers free shipping.

Nice blade. Great looking handle wood. Traditional looking. A lot of the guys on some of the other forums have one. We are into simple basic blades.

For a whole lot less money, I suggest a Schatt & Morgan Mountain man lockback. I have never handled one, but I sure do have the hots to get one. Top quality and very collectable from everything I've read on them. A bit larger than you are looking for though with a blade over 3" and over 4" closed.

Longbow,
That mountain man looks like just what I was looking for, I wish that it was a bit smaller. Keep em coming guys. Chris

Of course there is the obvious option of the small sebenza. Not sure what they are going for right now but Can't be too much more than 200.00 (or I could sell you a spare NIB I'm sure I have lying around somewhere) and are of course higher quality than the Benchmade.
My 200.00 worth;)

I'd carry a sak or a spyderco, as far from tactical as you can get and will never let you down. For a sak, I would get a victorinox jumpmaster

The blade and flat screwdrivers lock in these big vics, a real great knife.
Under 40 bucks easy, its a steal.

Cant reccomend a spidey, dont own one yet.
The spyderco forums can help with that.

I own a SAK trekker and it is a fantastic knife, but I am looking for something a bit dressier. I have been looking on the internet at the queen/schatt and morgan mountain man and would buy one now if it was just about an inch shorter. Chris

SAKs and Opinels both cut as well as anything else out there and are on the far opposite side of the tactical spectrum. Since you mention dressier, have you considered the Alox SAKs? I have a Farmer model which is a fairly perfect tool combo to me and looks superb IMO.

Ragnar (www.ragweedforge.com) carries some wood-handled folders from EKA that have gotten great reviews here and feature the much loved Scandi loved.

I think a UKPK or Caly3 from Spyderco wouldn't be too tactical compared to what you've been carrying, especially if you got someone like STR to replace the scales with a more friendly color like green or blue. Something I'd consider if you found a tactical kind of knife you really like and wanted to make it more acceptable looking. Something to consider that might extend your options.

you can get some limited bucks, like the 110, 112. neither of those even whisper tactical, and i think the stag handles and whatever steel it uses runs about 140. check out cabelas catalog, thats where I saw it.

Good choice. When I get one, it'll have the 1095 steel, but I'm wanting the cocobolo ever since seeing one pictured on another site. I was looking at the sambar stag here.

Ah , some body beat me to it. A Case trapper. I have been carring one of their new dark red bone slimline trappers in cv and I love it. I think the 2 bladed version is also avaliable in cv in that handle material. It is also avaliable in amber bone. For the kind of money your talking about spending you could also get an older one off ebay pretty easy. No lock but still a great folder for woods use and plenty classy to take to town. my 2 cents.

Yeah I know the Sodbuster didn,t fit your criteria. Its less than twenty bucks and not a lockback.

I like mine so much I don,t use it much as the pocket/work-knife I bought it to be.

I've been carrying a Buck Prince for the last 3 years since my wife gave it to me. Very similar to the one I had when I was young, and for less than $30 it is a steal. Takes a great edge, doesn't look tactical, and doesn't pattern in my suit. I use it often at work, and rarly get a rasied eyebrow. I also have a small knife on my money clip which I got after my father passed away. He carried it for 20+ years and was all he ever needed for light chores.

Mike

When you guys say "tactical" you mean something that looks like its purpose is for hurting someone? Versus something that is clearly only a tool, like a SAK or tiny pocket knife?
