EDC knife

No I am talking black coated blade, G10 scales and clearly designed as a weapon. As opposed to stag, pearl, jigged bone or burl wood with a nice polished blade, something that someone would want to look at instead of be afraid of. Chris

runningboar, I suggest a Buck 501. My browser is all scrwy and I can't load pics here, so here's the google image link: http://images.google.com/images?cli...fficial_s&hl=en&q=buck+501&btnG=Search+Images

I got one a few months ago off Ebay; I forget the exact price but it was less than $30. Hasn't been out of my pocket since, and yup, I use it for everything from whittling to cutting steak. It's 420HC stainless, not carbon steel like you prefer, but it rides like a feather in your pocket, takes a very nice edge, and definitely does not "scream tactical". I think the simple nickel bolsters and rosewood handles are quite gentlemanly. Unfortunately, I don't know if they're available with premium wood or stag handle slabs :( I bet someone here could replace the scales for you though, and it would likely still cost less than $200.

I wouldn't blame you one bit for getting that Mountain Man, that's a classy design for sure.

How about an AG Russel Lockback or Mini Lockback? They look like "regular pocket knives" and have 3" or 2- 3/16" ATS34 blades.

Great choice - it's my EDC, but with D2 steel and maple burl scales. A real fine knife for the price.

I think I a going to drop some strong hints about the queen knife and a gransfors hatchet, thanks everyone for all the help. Chris

Cudos to you. I've been accused at work a while ago of carrying a switchblade at and thus being a violent threat by a nut w/ an agenda (I had to get investigated). I was carrying a Benchmade mini-stryker at the time, so now I've dropped down to a Spyderco Calypso Jr. ZDP. It's amazing how much less attention it draws when the handle is a burgandy/near-pink color.

I'm guessing you like the one-handed opening and lockback feature. With my limited knowledge/collection I'd recommend a Spyderco, Delica or smaller (New York City laws). I was going to recommend the Case's Russellock but mine's really hard to open/close at the halfway point, even after WD-40 on the joint.

Yup, I turned in my request for the Queen Mtn man with Cocobolo scales and D2. I thought long and hard on the birdseye Maple, but that coco is the one for me. I wanted to hold out for the 1095, but after communicating with a few people that own the D2 version, I decided to go ahead with it. Now, if Santa has one for me, I'm a happy camper.

I'd suggest a Fallkniven TK3 or TK4. Both are nice pocket sized lockbacks with fantastic blades. The TK4 is very light at 1.8 ozs, and the TK3 is dressier but heavier at 3.5 ozs.

Both are very nice knives and will hold an edge with the best of them.

Through trickery and subterfuge I am 95% sure I am getting a Queen Mountain Man in 1095 with crimson bone scales for christmas, thought about the stag but couldn't justify nearly twice the cost. So it looks like the AFCK is going to get retired, I will let everyone know how I like it and how it performs. Chris

My favorite is a SAK Soldier model for everday carry. Trying out a SOG Twitch II as a serious possible. It rides about the same as the SAK in my pocket if I don't use the clip. I generally carry several knives. One gets rotated and the SAK stays in my pocket.
