What's the recommended edc leatherman. I need pliers, a file and a saw. Only preferences other than I don't want 1 pound of metal in my pocket and nothing overly expensive. Anywhere under $50 dollars is good.

are you looking for really hard use, or just occasional? work related or just an "in case" sort of thing? I'd look at the sidekick for sort of general use, your kind of pocket knife replacement, casual sort of carry since its got the pocket clip. Downsides to the sidekick are that its heavy for how many tools it has, and the file and cutters are not the best, but for most things its pretty reasonable. For work, or heavier stuff, I'd go for the rebar, a little looking and you should be able to get one second-hand or on sale for your price. Belt carry is preferred for the rebar. Rebar doesn't give you a one-handed blade, but the trade is really good tool density for the weight, fantastic wire cutters, two blades, full sized file and saw. they aren't an art piece but very functional.

 Plus it weighs only 6.7 oz. and accepts the neat bit adapter that fits over the ph driver. Had it been available in 1996 when I got my first Leatherman tool, it might have been my only from then on. Well, except for the Charge TTi ;) .

Ya, I am mostly interested in the rebar. But I wanted to see if there was anything else. Doesn't have to be leatherman. Just no Swiss army knife, I hated mine.

You should be able to pick up a pretty much mint Wave on the auction site for under $50. Diamond file, outside tool access, finer pliers, exchangeable bits, and accepts a pocket clip. Rebar has replaceable cutters, coarser pliers, an awl, and a bit lighter weight. Both are excellent tools, but things to consider.

I have no idea how much it weighs or costs , but " Man Up " and carry a Surge .
I've carried one on my belt every single working day for the last 12 years and I'm still alive and I don't walk in circles because of how heavy it is .
If you want a serious " Work " multitool without bells , whistles and a band , get a SURGE .:)

i am actually rather interested in the charge tti recently... mostly due to the s30v blade... any opinions on that one?

I have a couple Surges and like them (old and new model), but they're bricks and the pocket clips don't actually fit. Not a good choice for the pocket carry the OP wants IMO. You could couple a Wave or Rebar with a 125mm pair of Knipex Cobras for the same (or less) weight as the Surge and have all the same functions with a pair of pliers far stronger and more useful than the Surge's regular pliers section (or any MT for that matter).

I like mine other than the cap crimper. It's pretty much a Wave with better steel on the PE blade, a cutter on the SE, and a bit more comfortable grip. I like the older style scales better than the new ones, but that's just personal preference. If you don't mind spending for those extras, it's probably the best available MT on the market IMO (with emphasis on that part). I've mainly been carrying an XTi with a Wave head lately.

I don't want to stray too much, but you can get a SOG Power lock in good condition on the auction sites for sub $40 range and easily customize the tool loadout. Plus one handed opening! I also have a Rebar, Wingman, and the SOG Blacktip PowerAssist (now THAT'S a monster...) and I carry the Wingman the most as it has a pocket clip and is spring loaded (call me a wuss if you must, but I prefer that). If I'm using the pliers most I go with the SOGS. For the most tools the Rebar.

SOG pocket power plier is small, lightweight, great pliers, and tool load out. Should be able to be found in your price range, I love mine.

I have a Leatherman supertool 300 its a little higher in price than $50 but its a good Multi-tool

i have the surge, charge tti, and super tool. all of them are excellent, but the surge is my favorite. if your going to use it daily get the surge, if your goiing to carry it daily and use it occasionally get the charge.

I have several including the Charge TTi, the original Supertool, the original PST, and most recently the Wingman, I like them all. I also have a Swiss Tool and Gerber. They all work fine and given me many years of service. Find the one you like the best.

The Rebar is very comfortable in hand and there are no sharp edges to dig into while gripping it. Every tool on the Rebar locks, except for the pliers, you can replace the wire cutters if damaged, or remove and sharpen them yourself. The only other tool I miss is the scissors, but you can pair the Rebar up with a smaller multi-tool like the Leatherman Squirt PS4, Leatherman Micra or Leather Style CS. Of course there are the Victorinox Swiss Army Knives to choose from as well, so you have many different options at your disposal.

What did you hate about your swiss army? granted, for the purposes of this discussion both styles of victorinox multi are heavier and more expensive than what you are looking for, but fantastic tools.

Hard to imagine anyone hating a Victorinox, But I won't hold it against you.

A Wave with a pocket clip will work with stiff pockets like on jeans, but I find it a little floppy in khakis or dress pants. The PST is my pick when I need to pocket carry a plier based tool, but it lacks a wood saw.
