EDC limits

When I think ‘beater’, I think of a knife that I don’t mind using for doing things like cutting tape (not a fan of tape residue on a fresh edge on an expensive knife), opening bags of bird seed (getting dust in the action if it has bearings), dog/cat food (inside of the bags are kind of greasy or waxy or something and need to be thoroughly wiped), opening bags of rocks/gravel (obvious), prying off zip ties that are really tight on a metal railing or something (happens often when taking down seasonal decorations), etc. etc. For these tasks I use my Byrds and Moras—even though the Hinderer or whatever else is in my pocket could easily do any of these tasks. I guess my limit for actually using any of my nice knives is pretty low, so I use a ‘house’ or ‘garage’ knife…:/

I'll agree on most of those tasks. The "house" or "garage" knife is a step below "EDC beater" but what a value. :D

I wish I could remember who gave me this tip but Zippo fluid is like magic for tape residue. Squirt a little on a patch, set it over the gunk to soak for maybe ten seconds, and then wipe away.

I use the knife I'm carrying for whatever I have need for.
I've became quite a fan of spyderco since joining here. I've used them to do all sorts of cutting and even prying 😮 .

The limit would be where I know it wouldn't perform or break. I also don't use my knives on drywall...

I cut whatever needs cutting with whatever folder is in my pocket. If I really need to bear down I grab a fixed blade. I always have one close by.

All you guys designating cheapos as “beaters” and not using your pocket jewelry might regret it someday. I love seeing wear, patina, and character marks accumulate on a nice knife.

Every mark tells a story. Memories made, bonds formed. You might get that with a cheapo beater but then what? You chunk it and buy a new one while your pocket jewel rides shotgun cutting nothing? What are you saving it for? SMH.

My one and only knife is a Spyderco Para 2. so its my fancy knife and also my beater knife. I've owned if for about 1 year and it has been used on the farm for work. cutting various things, breaking down boxes. scraping things and to the shock of many people on here, I do light prying and also use it as a screwdriver when I forget better suited tools.

I also use it as a photography tool putting the blade close and in front of my cameras lens to create some flaring effects sometimes also.

I need a new knife soon and retire the PM2 before it dies

Sage advice from AntDog AntDog The one you carry and use ends up having the most sentimental value, it might as well be a nice knife.

I only buy knives that are suitable to use. I don’t spend extra for flash, exotic materials have no value to me unless they are durable.

I’m retired so no work knives. With that, I usually carry three blades which are; a main EDC, a backup slip joint (usually a SAK), and a mini multi on my key ring. My main EDC is always my most expensive and honestly sees the least cutting.

Knives are tools...
And besides: Olamic has a Lifetime Warranty, and offers all kinds of Spa Treatments; for their customer's knives.

I have a full set of Snap-on tools. I keep them in a climate controlled safe. I only handle them with white gloves on when I polish them monthly.

I have a box of crappy tools I use to work on my trucks and equipment. that way if they break I wont feel bad.

The Snap-on ones are too nice to use.

I added a "haha" smiley to your post, but now you have me wondering if you were actually serious. :p

I do that too. Have wiha & knipex, but only use the harbor freight stuff. 👍🏻

I’ve used cheap knives from the counter buckets that cost under 5 bucks to scrape carbon, paint and gasket when working on engines, pumps and cruddy stuff. Maybe even prying staples out of triwall crates. That’s about all they’re good for, I usually have one stashed in my toolbox or on the bench. They are also for times when someone wants to borrow a knife. Lol

As for my edc/ good knives they are used for cutting only cause I want a good sharp knife when I need it. And I don’t loan them out either.

I carry a BM UFO II everyday. I us either, but don't beat it. It has never seen screwdriver or prybar service, 2 things I commonly see people do. Might it get dropped, or cut some cardboard? Yes.
