EDC on a plane

I'm flying from TN to CA on Tuesday (8/7/12)

I normally carry at least 5 knives on me at all times unless I'm showering or sleeping (Sometimes sleep with a couple, and definitely always have a few in reach... Never know when you'll be confronted with a clam pack... :p)

Anyway, I've flown a few times in the past and just done without, which you pretty much have to, but I want to know what you wonderful people DO carry/suggest carrying on a plane these days?

Nothing because: A) It's illegal, B) they have metal detectors and now these x-ray machines that you have to stand and be virtually frisked by at some air ports. C) if they find something on you you can be at worst case arrested and best case you just lost your knife. It's simply not worth it. If you want it that bad, check it and hope one of the attendants who x-rays the bags doesn't want it bad enough to risk his job. You can always mail yourself something if you really have to have a blade with you.

I carry my incisors in pearly white finish (with a coffee accent). I once had trouble opening the bag of delicious cookies, but now that I don't leave home without my teeth I can eat those cookies anywhere.
I once thought I'd only use them to open the cookie bags if I brought them when I traveled, but it turns out I can use them for a lot more! Trimming nails, making clicking sounds, intimidating dogs, and eating are all other uses you can use your teeth for when you aren't opening bags of cookies. Heck, I even chewed gum with them once. I probably won't do that again, there was a lot of corrosion.

5 knives? And I thought the 3 I carry was a lot :0.

Yea you can't EDC on a plane. I travel fairly often and had a few people tell
me that I could. For whatever reason some people are convinced that you can bring a blade onto a plane, and usually it's the ones who never travel.

Go figure.

I carry a Stainless Steel Cross pen all the time. I have it stuck next to other pens in my computer case then take it out as I get a snack on the plane.

Grow a couple fingernails long, and sharpen them. Won't hold much of an edge but it should do the job until you land.

I won't donate another knife to airport security. Kudos to those who mail themselves a knife to their destination beforehand! Otherwise, I like the idea of buying a SAK at your destination and gifting it to someone who's made the trip worthwhile...

When I am flying I am usually going to a place with questionable laws, plus I don't want to entrust anything expensive to checked luggage. I usually carry an older style multitool. With inside blades, nothing locks, nothing can flick open, so it can't be viewed as anything other than a tool.

I'm not so much looking for a blade to carry as wondering what other EDC items people use. (I think I've mailed at least a dozen blades ahead of me, and I'm bringing another half dozen in my checked bags. I'm moving, so my collection will get there somehow!) I know I've seen a few people who fly a lot that have a set EDC for planes.

For the terrorists who want knifes on the plane their is a way::::: cold steel makes a series of knives made from a synthetic plastic material, i think its called grivory or something like that. they might not be steel but they can def do damage.

I travel every week and the best you can do is a finger nail clipper to carry on and check a bag for your EDC's. Sometimes you can swing a p38 can opener on your key chain. I would only do this on an early Monday flight as they turn down the metal detectors and let much more "fly" through the xray machines due to the business rush. If you travel any other time than Monday morning plan on additional scrunity. Great thing is you can buy a lighter once you are past security.... that spells safety. I recommend only taking what is easily replaced. Some items tend to grow legs when they are checked.

Personaly a really large vehicle key is more easily used as a weapon and cutting instrument if it is needed.

Just have your knives in your checked luggage. If you really need something for self defense on board the plane, carry a solid pen, but not one of those stupid "tactical" pens, or a sturdy pair of shoes. If you need something for cutting, carry a small pair of scissors, since the TSA does allow them on board. If you're flying internationally, though, don't expect to be able to bring them on during your flight back. Here's a link to TSA's website so you know I'm not just talking out of my ass: http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/prohibited/permitted-prohibited-items.shtm

The TSA allows you to carry on two lighters at one time, but you can't have them checked.

Proven a long time ago that that doesn't work. TSA phased out metal detectors long ago, so they'll pick up on those, along with any tactical pens you might have.

I will usually just take a plain jane red SAK from Target in my checked luggage. If it gets stolen, they are real easy to replace with very little sentimental value. You can, however, take a good diamond stone with you on the plane or in checked luggage. With those 2, I'm good to go.

Haven't used these, but have looked them up as tsa approved carry on.

Wenger swiss clipper at
Leatherman style ps (i'd read some reviews before jumping though)
Any SAK with no blades or saw (not too sure on the metal file as its also a saw..guessing no.)
and a kubaton pen. Hinderer makes a couple i've been eyeing.

There's a good chance I'll skip taking anything questionable through security. I'm not too worried about having weapons on me. I feel pretty confident without them... Because I'm BATMAN!!! (I love HESHE!) in all seriousness though, I DO believe life favors the prepared.

I forgot a micra was on me one time after I checked my luggage so I figured I would give it away at the passenger drop off. I asked around a dozen folks who obviously were dropping folks off, man, you would of thought I was about to carjack them with the looks I got. Finally saw some guy in a Subaru, knew he would take it, and I was right.

Any way, it can be harder to give anything away at an airport, especially a "knife" (even a Micra).

Another time I forgot about a SAK after checking my bags and the only thing I could do was have them put it in an envelope and check it. Never saw it again. I had had that knife since I wasmaybe 6-8 and when I first got it we went to pick up a friend of my moms and being such a kid I did not know you couldn't bring knives through the security check (it was the mid to late seventies when you could go to the gates to meet people arriving). My mom spent around an hour explaining that her young kid who was not getting on a plane was not a threat. She talked about that just last month 35 years later

I carry a smal key chain with a couple of key-size screwdrivers (flat and philips), a small widgy bar (pry bar), a set of tweezers, PT pulsar, and a Leatherman Style on it. The Leatherman has a small (1.5") blade and some scissors; I haven't had a problem going through security with this "survival set" of little tools. I don't know if the blade is too small to be a worry, or if it isn't noticed as it's just another item on the key chain. Regardless, it's a handy set of items to have while waiting for my checked luggage to show up, presuming my bag's not lost again.

A small Crescent wrench might be a useful replacement for the brass snap...
