EDC on a plane

I know guys who regularly carry guitar strings, and one who accidentally took two packs of razor blades with him in his pocket (apparently they're not available or difficult to obtain in Japan). No nail clippers, but keys, carabiner, tactical torch and pen seem fine, and if things start to get heavy you could always order a bottle of champagne!

5 knives? And I thought the 3 I carry was a lot :0.

Yea you can't EDC on a plane. I travel fairly often and had a few people tell
me that I could. For whatever reason some people are convinced that you can bring a blade onto a plane, and usually it's the ones who never travel.

Go figure.

Yeah... I carry a lot of blades... I normally have 7 at work... Lol. Overkill I know.
I'm writing from the plane. All blades are in checked baggage. I did instinctively reach for my pocket to open my pistachios though. Lol

So instead of a smartass answer about bringing knives on planes, I'll follow CWLs lead and actually answer your question.

I like to carry on a flashlight, a few pens + notebook, iPad and headphones and not much else that isn't clothes... Note that I typically don't check a bag and will just buy a super cheap knife and/or scissors when I get where I'm going. :)

Much to my horror and chagrin I recently discovered that I had accidentally carried both a Spyderco Tenacious AND a Ladybug3 Hawkbill Salt in my carry-on baggage on a flight from D.C. I received some serious "feedback" from my wife and kids for it, too.
I now know HOW to do it, but will not reveal it here or anywhere else. Nor do I intend to carry such items on board in the future...Not worth the risk or the "feedback" :-)

I carry my aforementioned Leatherman PST in my checked luggage. In my carry-on I will always have a laptop and/or an ipad, a camera, reading glasses, ink pens and keys. I have 3 different carry-on bags now- one that is laptop only, one that is laptop + DSLR, one that is ipad + DSLR. I put a couple of small ziplock bags in my pocket before leaving for the airport. When I get to the security line I empty my pockets except for wallet into a ziplock and put it in the pocket of the carry-on. Since I'm a wristwatch enthusiast too I put my wristwatch in a separate ziplock bag so it doesn't get mangled by keys and stuff. I wear slip-on shoes and a completely plastic belt so I normally don't have to remove it. At a few airports that make me go through the radar scanner I do have to remove the belt and wallet anyway.

I usually hide something under the aluminum foil hat that I've made to keep the government from stealing my thoughts and reformatting my brain. They never think to look there!

EMT shears are legal... they cut all sorts of things and have combative potential at least as good as a kubaton...

A hickory cane is legal and in the minds of many a much more effective "defensive weapon" than a knife.

I always fly with a 550 bracelet, surefire backup flashlight, shrade defense pen, stainless steal ball bearing monkey fist key chain and a metal yoyo attached to a small carabiner that can pack a punch if needed. No blades but plenty of defensive and survival options.

I carry my wallet, phone, headphones, and keys. Don't feel a need for weapons on a plane but I miss the functionality of my SAK while flying.

Cane, no questions thanks to Americans with Disabilities Act. No one can ask you why you have 3 feet of solid hickory stock cane from the feed store. With it, I will seriously whup your tactical pen, monkey fist slung shot, guitar strings, flashlight, etc.

Oh yeah if you count the blade on my old Leatherman, I usually carry four knives on a daily basis. Spyderco Endura, Vic SAK Classic on my key chain, and a small slip joint. Sometimes a small fixed blade. Just because I like knives. Aren't we all on this silly forum because we like knives?

I think we need to calm down for a second, there is no way a hickory stick beats piano wire or guitar string... 'nuff said...

Sarcasm is often lost in the written word. I can't tell if you are serious or not.

Anyway, my EDC on an airplane usually consists of a change of clothes, a bottle of water, a book, an Ipod, and a small flashlight.

The stick is much faster to deploy than any wire or guitar string, and the outcome similar although the type of damage to the body would be different, perhaps this is what you are refering to.

For EDC on the plane, a good magazine will do along with my camcorder, there's good potential for shutter bugs from the window seat.

Heh.. I walk with a YoYo as well. Not many EDC'ers include metal YoYos in their arsenal. lol

As far as traveling with a knife, either pack a SAK or something similar and check it, or don't bother bringing anything with you at all. I packed a SAK cadet or soldier in my checked baggage, and had no problems bringing it to South America with me.

Just have your knives in your checked luggage. If you really need something for self defense on board the plane, carry a solid pen, but not one of those stupid "tactical" pens, or a sturdy pair of shoes. If you need something for cutting, carry a small pair of scissors, since the TSA does allow them on board. If you're flying internationally, though, don't expect to be able to bring them on during your flight back. Here's a link to TSA's website so you know I'm not just talking out of my ass: http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/prohibited/permitted-prohibited-items.shtm

The TSA allows you to carry on two lighters at one time, but you can't have them checked.

Proven a long time ago that that doesn't work. TSA phased out metal detectors long ago, so they'll pick up on those, along with any tactical pens you might have.

Where was this proven? News to me that TSA phased out metal detectors "long ago", I encounter them frequently when I fly, all over the US, far FAR more than I do the "backscatter" x-ray. I think you are confusing the walk through metal detector with the x-ray machine used on checked bags.

I knew someone who said he regularly carried ceramic or plastic knives on the plane with him, on his person. I thought this was idiotic as if he'd been frisked or told to go through the backscatter machine he would have been EXTREMELY screwed but he did it.

Stowing in a checked bag, Mailing yourself a knife or buying one on arrival and then tossing/giving away look like the best solutions.
