Hello all. Brand new to this forum; have a question that I would like some help with.

My EDC has been (for years) a Spyderco Dragonfly. I'm on my second one (lost first one), got the ZDP model. The dark green and updated steel are great. Been carrying this one for about two years and it is a great knife, especially for my situation. I work in an office and do not want anything too big, but need something functional. Dragonfly is perfect.

However, I want to add a second EDC, one that is a little larger. To that end three contenders are:
  • Spydie Delica. Enough said about this one; gets universal raves. Could also get it in Green/ZDP
  • Spydie Sage 5. S30V. Kindof dig the carbon fiber, compression lock. Also really like the wire clip, like my Dragonfly
  • Benchmade 940-2. S30V. Always liked this knife, axis lock, etc. I am a Spydie fan, so this is a little out of my zone.
I know this is a varied list. All are within my price range and fit my criteria, but I can only get one. Thanks for the advice.

Welcome! Since you already have a spyderco I suggest trying the 940-2. Delicas are great too!

I’m a Spyderco fanboy, but of your three I would choose the Benchmade 940-2

You’re going to eventually end up getting the Delica also. Lol

My 2 cents:

1) 940-2
Lightweight for size, disappears in pocket, open construction, fun to fidget with if that’s your thing. Good warranty. Sometimes hit or miss with fit & finish.

2) Sage 5
Spyderco quality, fun to fidget with, fair warranty, too big to be a small knife and too small to be a large knife(tweener)

3) Delica, compared to the others, meh

Is blade length an issue? Because of the knives you listed the 940 has the longest blade. It has a length of 3.4 inches.

I like the idea of trying out the 940 as well. I was a diehard Spyderco fan at first, Tenacious to PM2 to Sage 5. After the Sage I realize that they're all pretty similar and decided to try something different.

And in my opinion, I ended up making one of the best knife buying decisions by doing that too. I got myself a Benchmade Ritter mini Griptilian and I absolutely love it. Hell, I'll suggest you check out one of them too. It's small and office friendly, and the M390/20CV steel can actually compete with ZDP. Sadly the Ritter's been discontinued, but their production G10/20CV mini Griptilians are excellent as well.

That said, there is nothing wrong the Sage 5 or a Delica. I'd suggest the Sage over the Delica simply to try something new as well. It's a great knife and a good introduction to their Compression Lock.

Welcome. I think the correct answer is:

Out of your selection , I'd go with the Sage5.

But what about the Native5? That's my small folder of choice. Black G10/S35VN , Green G10/S90V , CF/S90V , Violet G10/S110V.

And you need to fix the title of this thread. Opion ??? Haha.

My first post and I have a spelling error in the title!! Dang. Tough start.

Went in and tried to fix, but could not see how to modify the title. Thanks for sticking with me and responding. All good "opions" so far. Fast too.

Going from a dragon fly to a 940 the 940 will feel like a sword. It does carry nice it is thin and light but it will be significantly longer. I find the thumb posts are too close to the scales for my big thumbs to quickly flick it without first digging under the post a little bit.

Of the 3 I would pick the Sage. Delica is a nice blade but for me it did not see as much pocket time compared to others. You may like the Native or Para 3 in the same size category. Also Benchmade 556-1 Mini Grip. great steel.

Sage 5 would be a perfect companion to the DF2 IMO... Similar but bigger. Office classy. Super useful size. My first Spyderco was a DF2, my second was a Sage1.

Def check out the Chaparral. It's slightly smaller than the Sage and feels like a larger DF2. It is pocket perfection IMO.

Bugout over a 940 every day.

Just go to your first post and in the upper right , it will say "thread tools". Click that then select "edit title". Done and done.

Get all three. But seriously, the Delica kicked everything else out of my pocket, it gets the reviews it gets for good reason. No matter what you choose I would recommend that you pick up a Delica eventually, even if it's the basic VG10 model.

I'm a bit on the fence between Sage and 940 I think for what you may be accustomed to the Sage is better but the 940 will give you a new experience. They are both solid options so can't really go wrong.

Had a couple Sages & Delicas. Gave them away and have 4 different 940s that aren’t going anywhere.
940.....any variation, my fave, 940-1501. Not sure if they’re still available tho.
Good luck and welcome!! That’s my opion!! Sorry, couldn’t resist. :D

I also carried a ZDP-189 Dragonfly for a few years before going nuts and buying too many knives. I've tried a few Delicas but find that they're too similar to the Dragonfly and I always wind up selling them. You might consider the Spyderco Chaparral as it comes in a variety of styles, is a wicked slicer, and is different enough from the DF. The 940 is an awesome knife in all its iterations but it does have a substantially longer blade even though it rides very small in the pocket due to its slender design.

Here you go . . . considering the office thing . . . Boker Brad Zinker Urban Trapper.
Long enough to cut the cake at office parties but so light and slim you can carry it in a shirt pocket. The long skinny knife here. It's a flipper with titanium frame and ball bearing pivot VG-10 steel that is quite decent.IMG_4075.jpg

Go longer blade than a Delica so it is significantly different purpose than the little Dragon.

As far as Syderco and ZDP-189 for a user the Endura in same steel . . . not much use in the office and no fun to flip. I CERTAINLY like using it though.

940s are lovely I like my carbon fiber with the blue spacers.

OH heck there it is ! This is the perfect knife for you . . . the UKPK.
Wire clip, fun to fool with, though no lock, trust me it is cool in the hand to open and close. Very light, great steel
(did I mention it has the wire clip ? yeah I like those too )
In my opinion this is going to be an enduring classic like the Buck 110. So light, so civilized, no nonsense, so useful . . . just a fantastic knife in use. This one is S110V if you think you need all that.
