EDC Rotation-Philosophy

I interchange knives in accord with what each day/night may require. Some days call for two or more knives to accompany me. I like to have the correct tool for a given task. So philosophically no sequential rotation, but more like form following function when there is work involved. When enjoying leisure time I'll employ what ever needs to get out for air so to speak. Usually something that reflects the mood of the day.

I suppose I "rotate" the "other" knives I carry, occasionally. I *always* have my Mini Grip; that never changes. I usually have another knife/other knives with me as well and those can change every so often, depending on mood or what I might be doing during the day. Usually will have some kind of SAK with me, too. But the Mini Grip is the one I can grab, use, close and put back without thinking at all so that one doesn't get rotated out.

I always have my small sebenza insingo with me, but I usually carry a second blade too, and that one varies with my mood. Best of both worlds: the "old friend" feeling that develops with carrying a knife every day, and the variety that comes with a rotation.

I carry a leek everyday (I have several of those), just because it's so darn handy and will do most anything in a flash. That being said I also rotate through my slippies. I always carry at least two knives. I usually change out every few days or weeks depending on how enamored I am with the current rotation knife. It also depends on clothing and the days activities. The leek only rotates from the rfp to the rbp depending on what else I am carrying/doing. Right now the slippie of choice is a GEC #54 big jack.

I suppose "whatever floats my boat" is my philosophy for EDCs (and generally, too, as much as possible...). I look at the shelf and one (or two) call(s) to be used. Do I feel like it ? Yes = here we go. Are there restrictions or conditions (like bow tie suit or urban surroundings), then some thinking may be required. The world of knives holds so many pleasures for any situation... Just as a hint : a Tidioute Houndstooth #55 is almost always perfect (and very gentlemanly, too).

I've never really rotated knives because I usually have one or two favorites, and I carry them both - if I can't decide :)

I also look at my buying/carrying as me evolving and figuring out what knife *best* suits me. I found that I like slim/light-weight designs for EDC, and now I won't spontaneously buy what's trending/or the next big folder..

I could get rid of all my folders today and keep my 940's/530's and be a happy man.

Whatever I grab first. Last few days it has been an Opinel slim EFF-10. Could be a KA-LOK 2227.

I kind of like the GEC Ben Hogan, but I have to admit my little Tidooute antique weave grizzly bone Dogleg Jack (#56) is a nice little knife when I want a small one in the pocket. I haven't been using it or the Ben Hogan. But I have been going through changes on EDC perspectives which is why I started this thread and felt others might like to chime in.

Been my problem too.

When I first became able to buy (graduated, got a job, etc)(1978) I rotated basically into the newest purchase (Lile Lock back, Lile EZ open lockback, etc)(leather pouch, pancake, sideways sheaths, this was before clips) when I needed one it wass always an adventure because about the time I got familiar with a set up, I'd buy something that looked like it might be better and wound up with a collection of nice used knives. Back in the day, we purchased off of 'knife lists' except for AG Russell who put one out with pictures, anyway, I called Phil Fallon (Nashoba Valley Knife Works) to ask about one, it had already sold, he went to trying to sell me on liner locks (I was still a lock back person), to the poiny , he had just taken in a slightly used Terzuola liner lock, titanium etc and was so sure I would like it, he offered to send it, if I liked it pay him, if I didn't send it back (I had made several purchases thru the years). Long story trying to shorten up, that knife has pretty much clipped to right front pocket every day since 1988. around 2001, a screw came out of it, I called Bob, he said send it back, I said ok, sent it FedEx on Monday; he received it Tuesday, cleaned up the handle, replaced screw, sharpened it, tightened everything and got it back out in time for me to get it back Wednesday (Mississippi/New Mexico), No charge and I've to this day never actually bought a knife from him. I own several now, sold/swapped a couple, but all that was 'aftermarket'. Point being, I suppose, after 25 years that knife feels like part of my hand in use and when something works it works. On the other hand, I felt the same way about lockbacks and belt holsters until 1988. So I'm not sure what my point is or was, obviously, change can be good.

I work in an office environment, so usually I carry my knife/multitool in my pocket or larger knife in my bag.

As for rotation, I tend to rotate to get familiar with or learning to use a certain aspect of a kinfe/tool(for example, locking blade vs non-locking blade, SAK vs LM).

I'm carrying my LBS Zaan from CRK. Take note, folks, this model CAN be easily closed one-handed...unlike previous iterations of the Umnumzaan which severely limited thumb access to the lockbar. It is likely my favorite. I also carry a large Sebenza a lot, and occasionally my Grayman DUA.
Many others are NIB trading material and I don't touch 'em except for photos.
I've pretty well tried everything (of interest to me) between $100 Spydercos and $700 Hinderer XM-18's. The three I've mentioned do everything I need for my casual carry.

I always have the same light (streamlight stylus pro), one of two mini multitools (leatherman ps4 squirt, or gerber dime), and then two folders. I rotate the folders because I like all my knives, but I find it hard to carry them all at all times, so I carry whatever fits my fancy.

It just depends on what I have in the drawer lately. I will try different ones to see how I like it, or if it has a neat tool (SA) or just a thin profile (Leek) to see if is handy. My problem is how do I rotate my fixed blades when I camp only so often.

On fixed blades, you don't. But you can carry them along during walks in the woods and so forth. Those actually are the times when I tend to play, because I have no distance objectives. I have a small Dozier K42 Personal in CMP 154 that I EDC from time to time, but it gets carried in the woods too.
