EDC: Smooth vs. Serrated

I say get a SE Caly 3 for a EDC. At least give one a shot, most people have never EDCed a SE for any amount of time (a week of more). I didn't, hell I carried a SE pacific salt weak side for more than year, but only used it for food. I had a chain saw in my pocket and never started it, on anything other than food. That is untill I saw a SE Caly 3 on the forums for 70 bucks shipped! Hell I'm a Spydie man so I couldn't let it pass. I carried it for about three weeks, paired up with my Spin. I have made threads for both (Spin and Caly3).

The Caly 3 SE is a hell of a knife! Give it a whirl I bet you will love it to.

Like most of the other folks here, I prefer a plain edge for EDC. I carried a combo edge for a couple of years and found that I never used the serrated portion. I also found that a couple of times I wanted to use the base of the blade for a hard cutting task and could not because the serrations were there. Maybe if I needed to cut a lot of cordage I would want a serrated. But I don't cut a lot of cordage, so I carry a plain edge.

I prefer a plain edge Over a serrated edges, personal preferance. I hate combo edges because as people have said previously, they do not heve enough of either edge to do me any good
I will be the first to admit that serrated blades have there place (though I don't prefer them) They are great for rough cutting, cord, rope etc...You need to deside what you are going to be using this knife for then make a decision from there

If you can't afford one of each then get a combo edge. There great for multi-purpose use. I prefer either/or.

Side bar note: just picked up a Endura SE in ZDP189. This knife is about as close to a folding chain saw as any knife I've ever seen. Use it almost exclusively for breakin down card board boxes. Carry it along side my Delica ZDP PE and there is nothing I can't handle now for extended cuuting duties.

Yea, yea ... I know the Delica could handle it also but not for as long as the SE blade can ...

Just freakin love the SE ... absolutely amazing cutter.

Another vote for the plain edge here. I carried a tiny little combo edge knife, Timberlite, for many years and in most cases found myself wishing it was just a plain edge.

Serrations are terrible for light jobs, like opening letters, unless they're really sharp. They are great though, for sawing through things like cardboard, even when fairly dull. In that regard they will outperform a straight edge.
