EDC suggestion

I'm trying to find a nice folding EDC for my husband as a birthday gift, looking to spend around $150 or so. The downfall is he is a bit picky. For example, he hates my SOG Aegis because of the handle (zytel). So I'm looking for something folding, in the 3"-4" range, with a beefy handle, either full metal or with metal inserts, weight isn't a problem.

I've been looking at a couple of SOGs; the Vulcan and Tomcat 3, he has a few Bucks he likes for hunting, so I was looking at the Buck Tops CSAR-T as well. Of those, I think he would love the Tomcat aesthetically. Any recommendations? Seems to be a tricky price range.

In the 150 range, you shouldn't look twice at SOG, there are lots of good knives in that range, a few that come to mind are

-Benchmade 950, 710, 275, 810, 581
-ZT 0200, 0350
-Hogue EX-01

and lots more

To be honest, the ~150 range is the best bang for your buck range for knives, in my opinion, and the one I like the best

Kudos for being an awesome wife!!

Edit: also consider

-Spyderco paramilitary 2, Manix 2, and Gayle Bradley
-Any emerson

actually there are too many good ones to list, so if you can list a few knives he really likes, maybe we can help you come up with some that might appeal to him

Heh, I guess my downfall is that I really like my SOG, but I guess my price range was a lot cheaper.

As far as what he likes, I don't have a whole lot to go on, he has a Buck similar to this:

A few rather crappy Swiss Army knives, and he usually carries a folding utility knife, which he's expressed interest in replacing with a nice folder. Benchmade looks great, but most look like they have a plasticy handle which I know he doesn't like.

Sage 2 from spyderco, Second on the Hogue EX-01 have one in my pocket right now love the button lock. Any Benchmade with a Axis lock. you can get a custom Benchmade Griptilion with all sorts of handle colors S30v steel in 3 blade styles and engraving. A bit more but a very solid piece of Kit is the ZT 0550 and with the new changes to the ultra deep pocket clip makes it more supper better.

Get him an Al Mar SERE 2000.

And if not, look at:

Benchmade
- 950 Rift
- 810 Contego
- 710 McHenry&Williams

Benchmade looks great, but most look like they have a plasticy handle which I know he doesn't like.

They are made of G10 which is a glass-woven "fabric" that is impregnated with resin/epoxy. It feels great in the hand and is extremely durable. 1000% better than Zytel and FRN if you ask me.

Spyderco
- Paramilitary 2
- Superleaf
- Gayle Bradley (only one that I don't currently own)

I'd go for maybe a Spyderco Sage 2, Benchmade 707 had the aluminum handles, Benchmade 940/943 if you can find one for 150 looks like theyre right around 175 though

Maybe a Viper Start? They can be had for that and feature a coice of N690co and D2 steel and you can get one with micarta, stabilized wood or even carbon fiber handle scales.

Since he hunts another option might be a large Bone Collector from Benchmade. Wood or G10 scales and the axis lock. It's quite hefty and seems like it would be a very useable folding hunter.

I'd get him a benchmade Osborne 940......and I think it's great that your taking the time to do this for him:thumbup:

For that price I would consider Benchmade Rift. Great knife in the range you are looking for and BM customer service is fantastic. Great of you to join and ask for advice.

If you're looking for something beefy with "metal" handles... I would also take a look at knives with G-10 on the non lock side.
In this price range I would look at:
Boker Albatros - a little shorter than 3" but it's a small knife that carries and feels like a big knife.
Spyderco Sage 2 - Not super beefy but it is wide and makes a great EDC.
Spyderco Chokwe - Thin but a great EDC and can handle just about anything.
Nemesis Manx - Carbon Fiber and Titanium with VG-10 for $100 - Great deal on this.
DPX H.E.S.T. 2.0 - You can find them around this price range - Extremely Beefy.

My favorites out of those I've mentioned:
Albatros
Chokwe
H.E.S.T.

Nemesis Manx - Carbon Fiber and Titanium with VG-10 for $100 - Great deal on this.

Don't bother with the Manx its not what you're looking for - trust me. I have one and in no way is it beefy. Its pretty small.

DPX H.E.S.T 2.0 is definitely worth looking at, however.

Cold Steel Recon-1 perhaps? Should not cost you over $70, otherwise you need to look harder. Excellent heat treat on the Aus-8a blade, Solid G10 handle, and the mighty Tri- ad lock by Mr. Andrew Demko. Not fancy but a good worker, and you will have money left over for a nice dinner:)

Having just recently received a BM 950 Rift I'm going to recommend that. The g10 on the 2 tone is awesome, I was surprised by how beautiful it was in person. I will say that while it's an extremely solid knife it just doesn't feel as big as it really is, though before this I was carrying the lightweight manix 2.

Agree with this post completely.
