EDC suggestion

Too many choices! Now seriously looking at Benchmade 581, 950 Rift, Zero Tolerance 550, and Bone Collector 15050

Go to Kershawguy.com and purchase a Zero Tolerance 0300, 0301, or 0302 Blem for around 150. About as beefy as they come and great service.

A blem is a good option, but if you want the warranty, a blem isn't the way to go.

I've owned a few different Bone Collector's and they are great knives.
The ZT 0550 is a beast as well.
I do prefer the D2 steel on the Bone Collector and DPX H.E.S.T. better though.
I also prefer the size of the HEST better. It just feels right in the hand to me.

I'm torn between the 950 Rift and the Bone Collector 15050-2. Both look awesome, the 950 seems a lot more durable, better steel. The 15050-2 would be more to his tastes, with the walnut handle but that would mean upkeeping the wood, and D2 isn't stainless.

"better steel" is a term we like to avoid. Just because D2 isnt stainlesss doesn't mean it is difficult to maintain. Ive never had any rust issues on any D2 or other tool steel blade I've had

In fact, in benchmades' eyes, D2 is an upgrade to 154CM

Maybe a Viper Start? They can be had for that and feature a coice of N690co and D2 steel and you can get one with micarta, stabilized wood or even carbon fiber handle scales.

Since he hunts another option might be a large Bone Collector from Benchmade. Wood or G10 scales and the axis lock. It's quite hefty and seems like it would be a very useable folding hunter.

Funny, I was going to recommend that too.

Then there are the usual suspects. Spyderco, benchmade, zt.

154cm and D2 are both premium steels, they just have different strengths. D2 is very popular, it's not a stainless steel and it will rust if not cared for properly but it is an excellent performer. I personally prefer 154cm but that's just me, lots of people on this forum would prefer D2. You need to consider how important rust resistance is because even stainless steels will rust and also how ruff he is going to be with the knife. I've not personally used D2 very much but I've heard it can chip out, other forum members can give you are better 154cm vs D2 view. Just googled 154cm vs D2 and a lot of discussion threads pop up.

you can't go wrong with the Spyderco Para military 2 or the Benchmade griptilian. any husband would love to get one :D

Both are great knives and you can't go wrong either way. I actually prefer D2 to 154CM as it will hold an edge quite a bit longer and is actually quite stain resistant. The thing that would tip me toward 154CM is if your husband is going to spend time around saltwater. As for care of the wood scales, I wouldn't worry. The way they treat them they shouldn't splinter or pick up dirt and they won't wear much faster than something like micarta.

It's a great knife. I've been on an Italian knife kick recently. Viper, Fox, Lionsteel and Fantoni all seem to make really nice products. I just wish there was a bit more variety in terms of steel.

Yeah there are some nice italian designs out there. I've had my eye on a Lionsteel daghetta for a while now. The french regional knives are also pretty interesting., they are even worse for the steels though. Good, no nonsense blade geometry but you'll be lucky to get anything better than sandvik. On the other hand sandvik is probably good enough for general use anyway. Laguiole's especially make for great all around slip joints. fontenille pataud, and laguoile en aubrac both make good laguoiles

Get him an Al Mar SERE 2000.

Did you choose between the 950 Rift and the Bone Collector and purchase one? Decide on something else? Just curious if/where your search ended.

Flip a coin, either one will make him smile so hard it hurts!
