There are a ton of great choices in the $50 range. The only issue is that so many of them use D2. It's a popular EDC steel but it's only semi-stainless. Living in a humid place, that might not be the best steel choice.
Right now, I think Civivi offers the best value for the money. They've really proven themselves with great fit and finish, smooth action, and good cutting geometry. They've done impressive things with 9Cr18Mov just under $50. They also have a few knives in VG-10 that are currently on sale at BladeHQ. Here is their current stock in those two steels. Enjoy!
