Hi,
I am looking for an EDC Tanto blade Assisted Open folder to upgrade to.

My current EDCs are cheap China made Stainless /1025 Surgical Steel Police Techs that I bought for ~$3.
I think I am ready to get a decent knife for my EDC.
I would like to keep it cheap, but still quality. ;D

Requirements:

  1. Tanto Blade
  2. A grip that feels good. (G10 Preferably)
  3. Assisted open
  4. Around ~$100 MSRP.
  5. Quality Steel (durable, strong, reliable)

American made is preferred!
I would love to find a cheap Automatic Tanto.

Seconds/Blemished are acceptable and preferred for price!

Found this steel review:

Could anyone please give me some names of decent Tanto Assisted Open Folders like this?

Thank you for taking the time to read this.

What's "military grade steel"?

And do you want $25ish or under $60? That's a pretty big difference.

Kershaw RI I/II fits the bill, they may be made in China but Kershaw's chinese stuff is great quality.

I should have probably added an example of one I've been really liking.
I really do like the http://www.gerbergear.com/Tactical/Knives/06-FAST-Knife_31-000216 Gerber 06 FAST. (I would love the auto version, but it's way out of what I am willing to spend)
Walmart also sells that FAST version for $50.
But I am not educated enough with the knife market to be able to find any other, possibly better ones.

Sorry about that not being clear, Ideally I would like to pay around $25 for one, but I understand that I would sacrifice quality at that price.
However, I do not want to pay more than $60 for one.

Military grade meaning it would be suitable to be issued in the military, I am assuming they don't skip on quality.

I wouldn't go less than the Kershaw Blur, Tanto in the $45-50.00 range.

Thanks for the suggestion.
Adding to my list of maybes. :]

I wasn't able to find this one when I Googled it :[, "KERSHAW RI"

Still don't understand military grade steel...

Definitely look into Kershaw. There are a few knives with different blade shapes available...including the Blur. Has sandvik steel, which takes a keen edge and is pretty easy to sharpen. I suggest you stay a way from Gerber, especially models made in China. They are not worth the money.

If you want some of those things, you might have to bump your budget up a little. Hard to get everything in the description on that kind of cash. I will recommend the Kershaw Blur Tanto as well. great knife.

Tanto Blur, or if you can stretch the budget, a Benchmade 587 Warn Barrage.
I'm not sure what Military grade steel is, but D2 is definitely quality.
It'll definitely be an upgrade.

Good luck.

I was planning on finding one and buying from an independent seller on ebay, knife show, or similar for a lot less than MSRP.
They sell them New without box or something like that for less.
That was the discounted range I was thinking when I posted that.

I am going to up my price range to ~$100 MSRP and update my OP.
Since Automatics start at ~$150 MSRP from a fixed price site, I am not sure how much higher I should go for an assisted.

How much higher would you recommend for an Assisted Open?

Thanks for everyone input, I really wasn't expecting such a great response. :)

Benchmade barrage 583 is now in your range, and it comes with tanto and/or serration options.

The benchmade Stryker fits that bill. It is towards the top of the budget though. The mini's (3inch) can be found under $100. The full size (3.7 inch) would be just over $100.

i'm also going to recommend the kershaw blur or benchmade barrage/warn. both are great knives with good steels.

Then I would go with the Hogue EX01 Tanto. A few dollars more and though not an AO, you can whip that axis lock out just as fast, and also have a made in the USA top of the line folder!

If you want to spend that much, start looking at the ZT 0400. That is a really good knife. It's assisted, tanto, and a very cool design. Keep in mind, you really don't have to drop a ton of cash to get a great knife. I love the ZT0400, but if it pushes you out of your comfort zone, then the CRKT might be a better choice.

Also,,,there is the Benchmade Griptillian in 154.....has a tanto. Benchmade makes some nice knives as well.

I don't know if this is the right place to ask this, or if I should open another thread...

Does anyone know the knife laws in Ohio?

Are Automatic Open knives illegal?
The ORC 2923.20 A(3) only mentions selling or furnishing "switchblade" knives, not buying, owning, or carrying.

Is there a max blade length?
The ORC doesn't make any mention of it.

Only asking because for the $100 price range Autos fit in there and I want to get one with a decent size blade.

Thanks!
