EDC that is a effective seat belt cutter too

I hear you on that one. What I am talking about is extreme "right now" emergencies(car fire, flooding) I would never move someone in any other situation.
Firefighter/Paramedic responding here. I carry multiple knives on me always. My shift knives are a Spyderco Breeden Rescue, CRK Umnumzaan, and a Becker BK-9

the spyderco is the way to go. blunt tip, good ergos etc. sharp.

Normal carry drops the BK-9 and adds a Case Trapper.

The spyderco will perform excellent in the EDC environment and gets used much more than the others on duty and off.

That being said, I'm obligated to say that a civillian cutting someone out of a car should be a last resort. We get there fast. Only do that if the child/person is in imminent danger. if its a fender bender and they are stuck, cut the belts but leave the victim, we can immobilize their backs and necks and minimize potential paralysis or death from spine injury. Trust me, the last thing you want to do is harm your own family member or friend not knowing they had a spine injury. I've seen it done and those cases stay with you.

I think I am just going to get a new Benchmade rescue hook #7 to keep in the overhead compartment in my vehicle to suppliment the #5 model I have in the glove box. This, with my edc knife on me is the most realistic option I think as for preparedness. Thank you all for the feedback. As is mostly the norm, the replies here are solid.

Any sharp knife. Anything sharp. Seat belts aren't that hard to cut through. You can use a piece of broken glass if you didn't have a knife. What ever gets the job done. No one should burn just because someone is scared to poke a trapped person.

The idea that you need a special serrated cutter for seat belts is an urban myth started by a knife company that makes a lot of serrated blades. Even a little sak classic can cut a seat belt if it's sharp.

Carl.

Dont need it as EDC, you just need one dedicated blade that will always be in your car...

just keep your knives sharp and they will all work well.

another idea is to get something like the benchmade 5 seat belt cutter and wear it around your neck.

I gave my wife a Spyderco Assist for the exact same child seat reason of the OP. It blazes through seat belt material like butter, blunt tip and the hokey glass breaker is decent.

Nobody has mentioned SAK. There are a number of models with a seatbelt cutter. The Fireman is a large knife but has the best belt cutter around, along with the SAK Rescue Tool. The Hunter has a gutting blade that works as a belt cutter, just as the Fireman's belt cutter is a great gutting blade! Another neat one is the Parachutist. It has a one hand opening blade and a belt cutter/gutting blade.

Apropos to the point that any sharp knife will do, a friend was trapped in a car and got out easily by cutting the belt with his Mini Grip, pe. I carry a large Houdini everywhere.

+1 to what TacticalBlade said (I'm "in the business" too).
About the extreme "right now" situations, any sharp knife will work. Depending on the situation, maybe breaking the glass could be more problematic. U won't have any problem in cutting a seatbelt with any sharp knife (starting with any SAK).
Probably, the ones who should carry one of those dedicated seatbelt cutter/glass breakers are the ones who do not carry a knife.
