EDC traditional for my dad

The GEC EO models are really popular and sell out fast, so you would have to keep an eye on the secondary market as they haven't made a run recently.
If you want something pinchable, then the Spear-point #72 lockbacks have a lot of blade to grab a hold of, a smooth light lockback pull.
the #92 Eureka Jacks or Talons are also small with a lighter spring.
If he is doing more outdoor work these days, and he used to have a 3 blade knife, then a good stockman pattern would suit, the #81 Abilene Stockman is a classic stockman form, and the blade pulls are perfectly okay. There are still a variety of handle materials available.

Buck Knife 301 YWS Stockman Pocket Knife with Yellow Delrin Handle could be what he has. A stock can do a lot of work

I will go along with the Buck custom shop. Any of the 500 series, depending on what size you're looking for, maybe a nice walnut, would be real nice. Easily under a $100. That or check out the GEC #15 Boys knife, maybe a Clip point with a secondary pen blade in Antique yellow jig bone.

gmorel, I don't have anything intelligent to add to the suggestions already given; the comments about brand loyalty make sense to me, and a stockman pattern is very versatile. Does your dad still have his old yellow Buck, or did that get lost somewhere along the way? Just replacing that might be much appreciated; I know I have a "soft spot" for my very first knife!

I said I didn't have anything intelligent to add, but here's a suggestions that's maybe not so intelligent. :D Maybe you could get him a whole fistful of Rough Riders of various types, and he could try out a different pattern each day of the week and maybe enjoy the process of deciding what to carry each day. They're very inexpensive, but the ones I have are very solid performers.

Anyway, I think it's awesome that you'd like to get a nice knife for your dad! And congrats and best wishes to him for his courage and determination in beating cancer twice!!

Buck loyalty runs deep.

Since I have found this to be very true, I would get him a 301 instead of the 303. Same knife, just bigger. Same smooth backspring pull, stainless steel, great quality, and same pattern that he used to carry. And if you want to shoot high, try hunting the SFO in BG-42 to get him a premium model.
Meanwhile, welcome on this subforum and thanks for gifting a slipjoint to your father :)

For $150 or under, there are many, many, many models to choose from. Anything from GEC/Northfield/Tidioute would be an excellent choice.

Been looking primarily at those. Based on a lot of reviews they seem to be superb. Eyeing one on the exchange as we speak haha

A stockman pattern (from Case, Queen, or GEC) is a good option, as is the Canittler from Canal Street.

A Buck or Case stockman, as many others have mentioned, definitely the most functional pattern I believe I have ever carried.
Case peanuts are good too.
