As far as I know it's just a common snapping turtle. Don't think those dinosaurs make it quite this far north.

I am actually pretty sure that is an alligator snapper. The pronounced ridges and points on its shell are a dead giveaway. Commons have a much smoother shell akin to a normal turtle. I live in the most northern part of illinois and the alligator snappers are actually more common than the common which is odd.

EDITED: Yeah check this out. What is amazing is just how much of the alligator features are visible in that little guy.

EDITED AGAIN: while I am 100% sure that is an alligator snapper I have no idea why you found it in wisconsin. The only explanation I can think of is someone was trying to populate the area you found it or released a breeding pair. Very odd but cool find.

holy cow man, Mchenry county. Actually live in mchenry. Yeah the best knife shop in illinois is GPK. Best ones within driving distance are in rockford. Toms is a great shop right by the rockford mall. He always has a bunch of old discontinued NIB stuff no one else has. You been to the badger knife shows in janesville Wi?

Huh. Could be I suppose.

I checked out pictures of each as youngsters and the examples of AST had much more pronounced ridges and its beak(?) wasn't as raptor shaped.

Plus the creek I found him next to doesn't get much deeper than 3 ft. Whichever it is, my interest is piqued and I'm going to do a little more research.

Huh, never heard of toms, I'm gonna have to stop out there. I just found out about the badger knife show last year, and I'm planning on going next year.

Btw, my picture above was taken in Volo. If you're near Fratelos and see crane booms, chances are, I'm working over there lol.

Fratellos, lol. Its literally 5 minutes down the road from me. Volo has a really cool antique museum with old muscle cars. I found a vintage Italian switch there about 10 years ago. Great for older traditionals.

Nope, Im wrong. Turns out common snapper babies LOOK like alligator snapper adults. They smooth out as they grow. I guess youtube is good for something. Cool turtle though.

Yep, they have that yellow t-bucket sitting near the Dunkin Donuts right now lol. Check out Koenemann's deli sometime, their sandwiches are from another planet!!!

Long time reader, first time poster. This forum caused me to purchase the manix 2 that I carried today, as well as the sak cadet that I was also carrying. I'm very happy with both purchases. Great pics everybody.

Just keep him and feed him. When he's grown and bites you, you'll have your answer!

I already returned him to his creek. Found him wandering about the woodland about 50 yards from it. I assume he was recently born.

I threw him in like a boss though, skipped him like 15 times! ;)

I disassembled my Sage 1 today for cleaning. I also polished the washers on my Spyderco UF stone, all within 10 minutes! It's ready.
