Andddd, I don't see an easy way to make it look any better. It looks like there is enough material to just sand the top layer off without affecting the fit but, Im not sure that would look good.

First, thanks for the great pic. Lots more detail than I was expecting. Second, I am pondering what I would do with this. I probably would just make another scale, knowing me. I'll think about what you could do and I'll get back to you. Thanks, Walter

I would make a new one out of some exotic material...Damascus, Mokume or maybe some multi-colored/layed G10 with some design machined/filed into it.
It's like a blank canvas.

You could try filling in the six grooves with JB Weld and then sanding it down.
