Every day carry vs every day use. Do you enjoy the pride of ownership carrying a high end folder with the latest "super steel",

but almost always use the SAK on your keychain to actually cut something to prevent "mucking up" your good knife?

I have a Spyderco Gayle Bradley as a constant companion, but usually reach for the Skyline in my coat pocket for cutting.

After some thought, I decided I will use the GB next time. :o Maybe not to cut out the bottom of a fiberglass bathtub like

the one fellow did, but I know I could if I needed to! Life's too short! I own nearly 100 folders and usually use

only 2 or 3 to actually CUT things!!! I feel a lot of us are in the same rut. Spill your guts, you'll feel better letting the truth

set you free!!! There, I said it!!!:D

Nope. If I own a Ferrari I'll drive it like one and if I'm dating a pornstar then I'll do her like one.

Very much in the same boat. I love to carry my knives that very few people, outside of knife knuts, would know anything about. They can't understand and appreciate, but I can, and in the end that is all that really matter's to me.

When I need to cut something, and most, if not all, my knife needs can be taken care of with the Hammer Brand 4-bladed Canoe. But where is the fun in that?!?!? In the right company, I love to pull out the John W. Smith SD-3 with a 4.5" blade, and cut a hole in the orange the son wants. It is a lot of fun and worth every cent I have in these knives!!

Here's the JWS SD-3, and a Dustin Turpin Repentance, another eye-opener!!

That's why I didn't buy a $50,000 4x4. I wouldn't take it off-road...I would be afraid I would wreck it.

Well said sir! :D

I look for excuses to try out my knives. I used my 20CP Para for two weeks opening and breaking down dirty cardboard boxes(the ones that larger parts come in) at a friend's auto repair shop. I loved to hang out there for the chance to use my knives and to get a feel of how the steel works for me. Since I sold my mango farm, I don't have a lot of occasion for knife use but I bought my knives to use.

I dont agree. I use em all. Im actually on the other end of the spectrum. I use my knife for everything i can, even opening/cutting things i can easily tear or rip with my hands. I like using my knife

I'm one of those who carry one of my expensive knives, "just to carry it", rather than actually use it:(

Don't get me wrong, i use whatever knife i have on me for whatever task comes my way, i just wish i had alot more things to use my knives for.

If I carry it then I intend to use it, but I'll plan ahead to carry something that day that will be appropriate for that day's tasks. If I'm going to be building a theatre set or doing some model making that day, I'll carry my M16-14ZSF, because that's the knife I use for beat-the-crap-out-of tasks. But if i'm going to a wedding or church, I'll carry my Ripple because I know If I need to use it at all, it'll most likely be no more than paper or string, not chopping through particle board or carving plastic. I'm not going to carry a knife that I want to keep nice on a day that I know I'm going to be doing something dirty. And if I am wanting to carry a particular knife soon, I'll try to change my daily plans in favor of the knife I want to carry :D If you have a knife you like to baby but are really wanting to carry it, try not to do anything heavy that day! If you have a medium-heavy task day, carry a strong beater, not your dress knife. That's my theory, thanks for reading through all of it, haha.

I carry both a SAK and a super steel folder. To be honest as an urban office worker the SAK gets more use (toothpick...lol) anything that needs cutting gets the m390 steel.

I'll use whatever knife's handy. I don't have any high dollar folders these days, at least not that I'd carry. The ones left are all heirlooms from my grandfather and mostly valuable due to their classic nature rather than anything special about them. Day to day I carry a pretty disposable kit knife from knifekits.com and if I'm around the house there's always a fixed blade around.

Back when I carried more expensive stuff I'd only moderate my use based on the design. The really pointy Al Mar design didn't get used in a manner that would damage the point. That's one reason it's replacement when I lost it was a spear point Mel Pardue design. Now if only I hadn't lost that one, it was about perfect for me as an EDC. Thin, simple, good blade design... Maybe I should start looking for one on the used market. :) I miss that thing. I hope whoever found it is enjoying it as much as I did.

It depends on where I am. I use my primary expensive folders whenever I can since I prefer to use those, but sometimes you're somewhere where your Zero Tolerance blade might draw unwanted attention. That's when the SAK on my keychain gets some use.

This is my EDC and EDU....but I am back here because I am thinking of retiring it for something else.. so I am searching. Looking for that unique custom/production that can take everyday carry and use...I will probably move away for the Damascus, i feel it doesnt hold an edge long enough for my tastes...

I use what I carry. I also don't carry an expensive knife for 2 main reasons.

1. I'm cheap.
2. I'd hate to lose it.

90% of the time I carry a Delica 4. VG10 is good enough for anything I'm gonna come across and I won't cry too long if I lose a sub $50 knife (forum prices, which almost all my stuff has come from).

I think you put that Benchmade through it's paces, and then some!! I could never use the two custom's I pictured above for that. I am like lemmuhj in that I simply don't have that much to use my knives on, and when I do have to cut I don't really need anything except the inexpensive slippy I carry. But as I said.........I love to carry anyway!

that benchmade is an m390 tsek that was gifted to me. beating the piss out of it was the greatest way i could say thankyou. the seb and burger both have their use marks too. the burger less than the others though; its just not built for hard work. i'm not one to shy away from putting my high dollar knives through the ringer, but i'm not gonna take a gents knife and do the same work that the seb and tsek were designed for, if not built for
