Edc vs edu

I use what I carry. I also don't carry an expensive knife for 2 main reasons.

1. I'm cheap.
2. I'd hate to lose it.

90% of the time I carry a Delica 4. VG10 is good enough for anything I'm gonna come across and I won't cry too long if I lose a sub $50 knife (forum prices, which almost all my stuff has come from).

i actually only recently got that tsek pictured above back after losing it! haha

I can understand carrying a high end knife, but preferring to use something less valuable. But for me, I use anything I carry, and I carry em all. The Gerber MK1 hasn't gotten used (and hopefully never will), for obvious reasons. I love using my knives and finding out the personalities and nuances of each.

I carry one knife at a time. That knife gets used for whatever needs doing, period. I don't own any knives that don't get used, at least not for long - they get sold off sooner or later.

I use the knife that I carry, but I also plan ahead and think about what I'll be doing that day. I only have a few knives, so it's usually based on size. I think I would be hesitant to use a $300 knife though, too. The only knife that I baby is my grandfather's case mini-stockman.

I am in between both sides. I carry a fixed blade primarily for SD and as such, it spends 99% of its life in the sheath by my side. I carry one folder for EDU stuff and most have been used.

I wish I had been carrying a different knife that day I climbed on a ladder and had to cut sheet rock while 4 guys were holding it up. But all I had at the time was my benchmade rift and I wasnt going to make those guys stand there while I went and got a box cutter. As a result, my brand new rift has some heavy scratching on the black coating. However it did its job flawlessly!

I also have a Rainbow Leek that is my dress knife. I only carry it when I need a non-threatening/intimidating knife. As such, it doesnt see much use except for letter opening or cutting price tags off clothes.

My main folders arent too expensive and I have no qualms about abusing the crap out of them.

I use what I carry. I just wish that I could carry all my knives and still look like a normal human being.

I never bought a knife I didn't plan on using, but I did just go on a crazy buying spree so I've never had so many knives that fill the same role. right now I have 4 spyderco knives NIB in a drawer. I did use to carry a spydercard in my wallet that I almost never used unless I didn't have my main knife, but not for fear of actually using it. for a large portion of my life I carried a spare knife for whatever reason in different places that I rarely used just because my main EDC was more convenient.

I also use what I carry. I don't carry anything real nice though. Busse BAD, or Muck, or CABS are about the most expensive knives I EDC, although they do get used. (About $375, so not cheap, but also no where near a high end user!).

Recently I have started carrying traditional slip joints. GEC tend to be less expensive.

:o Maybe not to cut out the bottom of a fiberglass bathtub like

the one fellow did, but I know I could if I needed to!

+1, most definitely! LOL

EDIT:

I EDC a Leatherman Charge TTi that gets quite some use, a Squirt S4 that gets some and a P4 that gets hardly any (it's more of a back up tool anyway). The S4 and P4 I carry with my keys, so they're always with me. The Charge TTi accompanies me almost anywhere.

Then I have a Pohl Force Alpha Three Survival that's just wickedly awesome. I love to take it places, but I can only imagine the looks on the faces of non-knife people if I'd whip it out in front of them. So most of the time, it stays in my bag. Just having it there makes me all warm and fuzzy inside though. I'm thinking about getting an Alpha Two Survival as well, since it has the plain edge. Two big built-like-a-tank folders riding together side by side...you gotta love it!

Oh, and if I could EDC a fixed blade without getting into legal trouble, it'd probably be my Fallkniven A1/A2. But it's only in my dreams or daytime fantasies that that ever happens...lol!

Sure, there are days when I don't use my knife much, but it's good to have in case I do need one. You just never know what the day will bring, which is why I bother to carry every day. I generally have three knives on me: a Vic Rambler on my keys, a SAK Tinker, and a locking one-hander clipped to my pocket--which one I use depends on the task at hand and my surroundings. That said, the little Vic Rambler on my keys gets the most use and it's rarely for the blade.

So, I suppose I carry with the intent to use...

I will normally have a 3-3.75" locking folder on me as well as an Izula II somewhere on me as my "Oh $#!T! " knife. What gets used most often? Usually a Vic Camper. For me, working where I work, surrounded by flocks and flocks of what Sal would call 'non knife people' (I work for Whole Foods, Sal, THESE are Sheeple LOL) the Camper causes less 'attention'. Besides, the little knife just does a great freakin' job! Seriously, is there a better value in knife-land than $10-30 invested in a SAK?

Great thread. I love the car, porn star analogy. If you're unwilling to use, or loose, whatever you posses; you value it as a possession more than a tool ... man jewelry. My solution is not to posses something I value that much as a possession. Watches, cars, knives, clothes, you name it; I use it. I want a Sebenza so bad I can taste it but fully realize it would be just to posses it as loosing it would just hurt so much that I wouldn't carry or use it. I know ..... my loss.

Seriously, that day if/when everything goes wrong, I'm glad my Camper will be in my pocket. You can just do so much with it. I'm still waiting for the day the SpydieSwiss is invented....hear me there Sal? Heh heh heh. I'd take a Kershaw or Benchmade collaboration, too.

To me, it all depends on if you plan to keep it, or not.
If you are never going to sell it, the you don't need to be concerned about keeping up the re-sale value by not getting it all scratched.
Then, it doesn't matter how hard you use it.
If you plan to sell it for funds to buy another knife down the road, then it's important to keep it looking nice, and in nice condition for re-sale.

I use what I carry. I do always have a Vic Climber on me in addition to a locking folder - but it's used most of the time for the scissors, or if I am in a sheeple crowd, or someone wants to borrow a knife from me.

Another user here. Like others have said, what's the point of having a top-quality knife with fantastic materials if you don't put it to good use? :D

If it goes in my pocket, I intend to use it for whatever I may need to. There have been a few times that I was carrying a knife and wish I had a different one in my pocket. Simply because the task presented would have been easier with a more heavy duty blade. And I've also used heavy duty blade for something that I wish I had a thin little slicer. I guess that's why some folks carry to knives, but I don't carry stuff for show.
