EDC - Watch

Here's my EDC watch, a SEIKO SKXA33 200m Divers Automatic:

Hey Temper,

You've just given yourself an excuse to buy a Seiko Diver, for when you anticipate getting mugged:) If you don't mind spending the money the Seiko Prospex Marine Master is the best, much cheaper than a Sub and a great watch. Also the Seiko 007J is awesome, it is the all Japanese traditional diver (many of their divers movements are now made in Singapore, but the Marine Master and the 007J are 100% Japanese). I have quite a few Seikos Quartz and Mechanical, and while I wouldn't compare them to a Rolex, I don't see any reason to buy and Omega or Tag over a high-end Seiko, I'd rather go ahead and pay the diff for the Rolex, if I were to spend that much on one. Anyway said all that to say Seiko make a friggin' great watch, I've got my whole family wearing 'em, quartz, mechanical, kinetic, and no ones ever had a prob. In fact many people actually prefer a marinemaster or 007J to a Sub, all a matter of opinion, I'd rather have the Sub, but can afford Seikos :D I USED to buy plasitc cased Timexes as beaters, but after 2-4 years of hard wear the cases crack and the watch is no more, I've never used a G-shock but from my experiences with plastic cased watches I don't see why they wouldn't breakdown the same with time, I'm hard on EDC watches. Don't have any prob with a SS Seiko diver automatic, don't have to buy batteries for them either.

I've got one JUST like it and so does my dad, it is a GREAT watch, but some people may not like it bc it is HEAVY. The hands are really luminous, and for an auto mine keeps incredible time, hardly ever have to reset it.

I'll certainly put in a vote for Seiko watches filling a niche in the market which gives a great mix of value and quality. From Seiko, one gets a watch that for the cash output, would cost one more money in another brand (like Swiss and a few US made equivalents).

I've owned a good 15ish Seikos over the years. For what they provide their customers, their watches are stylish, well made, highly accurate, last forever, and personally have never let me down.

I have other tastes now (Swiss automatics watches and some quartz watches only for intermittent casual wear), so the Seikos in my collection have mostly gone away. I still, though, own one for sentimental purposes...a wedding gift from my wife (we went to Disney World for our honeymoon).

This Seiko has been my personal favorite (I recently sold this model off to a fellow BFC member when saving up for my Omega):

Sorry, couldn't do it. Watches and Optics are Euro or nothing :D (Although Seiko have a great rep, these are just my purchasing habits)
Knives are US
Boots are Italian
Foul weather gear and clothing are U.K
Flashlights are US

I have a seiko skx007 k2 classic diver with a jubilee bracelet. I've only had it for a few weeks so far, but I love it!

I want a Seiko MarineMaster one day...

*** The pic is not mine, gathered it from one of the watch forums.

Lots of great looking* watches posted -
not surprisingly (to me) mostly analog and toward practical and heavy duty.

All pretty good looking too...

and that's kind of the point -
whether we like to admit it or not -
watches are (among other things) also a fashion accessory -
most of us will know people who wear watches to match their attire -
we actually do it too.

So being "fashion" it is hard to just pick one and stay with it for the rest of our lives... -
even if we like to think we are pragmatic and practical -

tell the truth -
how many people really chose their watch without any regard to their looks...
ok, why do so many people like to show* their watch with pride if not for the looks then?
(now you see why the * was next to the "great looking" in my opening sentence? :D )

Talking about tough and heavy duty -
made me go back and look for a Casio G-Shock that I knew I had (somewhere :o ) -
GShockDW5600_2.jpg

This model DW5600 has got to be well over 10 years old - still on its original battery - yes the watch did reset itself when I pushed the light button - but I was able to reset the time last night and as you see from the photo it is still "ticking" fine.

This may be a classic of sorts as it may have been one of the first G-Shocks, if not the first(?).

The Casio MIL-Shock - SOPMOD Watch (Special Operations Peculiar Modification)
milshock3.jpg
dw5600ev1v.jpg

is based on the Casio G-Shock DW5600 - the DW5600EV1V (shown on the right photo)

So why did I change from the now "classic" status Casio G-Shock to the cheapo Timex?

Well the G-Shock was pretty heavy - and despite the more subdued black, kind of looked out of place in a typical office enviroment (see the thing about "fashion"?) - plus the digits were kind of small compared to the newer models coming out - then Timex's all day Indiglo (iridescent/reflective green back ground) came out - and the difference in legibility was immediately noticable -
as this comparison with my current Timex 53952 below shows -
the watches were photographed/scanned side by side - with obviously the exact same lighting and exposure.....
Timex_GShock.jpg

The Timex to me is better looking - lighter because of the cheesey silver painted plastic casing - which I know will wear off in years to come - it took about 5-6 years to wear off on my (previous) 7+ years old Timex 63947 - with wear definitely showing at about 3-4years...

But hey, I just admitted to myself watches are also "fashionable"*,
and I will have probably bought another by then anyway :D

In all of the watch discussions, nobody has mentioned Freestyle Shark watches! I've owned about 5 over the years, they take a lot of abuse, and most are water proof. The only problem is, with my perfect Shark Mako, I bought a new wrist strap, and had to disassemble the watch to put the strap on, and now I can't close the cover! Also, Shark watches don't like store bought batteries, the Freestyle rep told me that I had to send the watch back to them for a fee. My EDC watch is a Shark X, I've beaten the hell out of it, and for a watch that costs less than 100 bucks, it has really held up. For my yard work/gym/hard excercise watch, I wear an old Wal Mart POS, it has lasted pretty well, but its starting to crap out on me. The other Wal Mart or K Mart work watches I have bought have either fallen apart, or the LED has broken.

The Marathon SAR is my everyday watch - at least half the time. It shares wrist time with an Omega Seamaster Pro Bond. As for the SAR, for a regular ETA 2824 movement, it keeps outstanding time. It's +/- 1 second per day, and after weeks of constant wear it's still within 1 second of the atomic clock. That's quartz accuracy!

Here's a gallery of SAR pics that I culled from various forums on the web:

BTW - I also removed the date cyclops. It looks much better without it.

Senator, thanks mate. Looks absolutely awesome, and I am green with envy!!!
May I ask how much they go for and where could I get one?

On duty I wear a Bill Yao modified Seiko 007.

Off duty I wear the full sized, automatic, black faced, Omega Seamaster Professional that my wife bought for me.

Thanks to John B. Holbrook, II for this SMP pic:

I got my 2002 model for $625 (with bracelet) from Military Watch Resource. County Comm also carries the SAR. I've done business with both places and highly recommend them both. It looks like the 2004 model is going for almost $800 (with bracelet) these days.

You can search the MWR forums for the history of the watch. It's a solid chunk of steel. It's easily the most readable watch I own.

Which is why Casio makes Titanium G-Shocks.
