I'm in the market to buy a nice Edc knife.I need it to have a pocket clip and it needs to hold a sharp edge and needs to be fairly easy to sharpen. My budget is under 100 dollars. Iprefer a plain blade no serations. I like about a 3 inch blade to use. I work on a farm so I cut rope, twine, cable ties and cardboard often. what would you all recommend

Depending on what you intend to use the knife for, and how you intend to carry it, I recommend a Spyderco Delica or Endura. I favor the Endura and am on my third or fourth. My son likes the Delica because it's somewhat smaller. I also recommend you use punctuation and capital letters where appropriate in your posts, but then I'm a cranky old man who gets annoyed by stream of consciousness posts.

You have many, many options, sir. If you want small a Spyderco Dragonfly, Chaparral 1, Delica or a Cold Steel Hold Out 3 in CTS-XHP. Bit bigger and you can get a Buck 830 Marksman, H&K 14715 or a few different Kizer knives. Bigger still and take a look at the Cold Steel Recon 1, Talwar or Ultimate Hunter. I almost forgot the Kershaw Knockout in Elmax, which is an allstar performer. Take a look at some of those, and the other suggestions you're bound to get, and let us know what bits you do or don't like and we can narrow things down!

Welcome!

Any size preferences?

And for what its worth, I completely agree on punctuation/spelling. Since this forum is ENTIRELY based on text, it helps if the text is as clear as possible to prevent confusion/arguments/etc.

You may want to look at the Ontario RAT 1 and 2. Similar to the Endura and Delica that was mentioned above the knives are very similar, but are different lengths. People may have preferences on lengths based on use/comfort level/local laws, but other than that there is no real "right" answer for blade length, at least for an EDC knife.

Good luck on the search .

Spyderco, Benchmade (Mini Griptillian), or Kershaw (Blur) will be your best options in my humble opinion.

Every knife manufacturer claims to produce sharp knives that hold an eternal edge. I would suggest doing a lot of surfing and reading in the forum, then come back with specific details of need, and/or questions about specific models. Your opening question on your first post leaves about 1,000 models open that would fit your needs for one reason or another. For the most part, you get what you pay for....within reason. Sometimes the steel with ability to hold an edge for a long time, is not always the easiest to sharpen unless you have experience. And "easy to sharpen" will most likely need sharpening more often.

If you ask for advice that is broad, you will get a very broad range of advice. Personally, I wouldn't use my Leek on a farm, but someone else may. But I do have a hundred different models that I would have no problem giving a workout on a farm (if that were my life, but I'm stuck in an office for now).

Welcome and enjoy the banter. There is a ton of info here.

Its seems like the spyderco sage 1 meets your criteria.

-~$100
-~3" blade
-durable steel
-no serrations

Wow uhmmm a bit more info plez ,many many knives meet that criteria

They said farm work. That's plenty of info.

Noahtom, I do plenty of similar work and use a Buck vantage select. Since your budget is 3x plus what one coats you could get a nice thin Spyderco and it will do just as good, not better but you will like the large hole in the blade compared to the vantage oval, and it don't flip open without a good bit of wrist action. The more premium steels in the spydercos won't sharpen as easy but if you use diamond stones and maintain one before they dull you won't have any problems. There is always a pro and a con to every characteristic. You just need to decide which is more important.

Have fun deciding, most of all don't over think it, your going to be using it and it's going to be worn out in a few years anyway, don't matter what you get. Pocket folders used regularly just plain wear out, especially for farm work.

With the additional information I recommend the Spyderco Native Lightweight in S35VN. It's a solid knife and the steel has a really nice balance of wear resistance, toughness and corrosion resistance while still being pretty easy to sharpen. It's alsl made in The States, which I know some prefer.

I'd go with a Spyderco Delica in ZDP-189 or a Sage 1 in S30V, both currently available online for <$100. If you change your mind and want something a bit longer than three inches, maybe an Endura or a Paramilitary 2, but now you're going a bit above $100.

Yes, that's four Spydercos. You'll get a lot of Spyderco recommendations—not necessarily because they're the best knifemaker on the planet, but because their catalog is so robust that you can recommend them to people you don't know based on a single paragraph of vague requirements and still have a good chance of finding something that (a) they'll like, and (b) will do the job, whatever that turns out to be.

I would second the above recommendations of either the spyderco delica or a benchmade mini grip. They both have clips, 3" blades, good steel that holds a decent edge and sharpens easily, and can be found in your price range. They also both come in a wide variety of colors!

I'll throw one more idea out. If for farm work where gloves may be worn and knife used often, a good fixed blade may be the way to go. Again, I don't have any specific models to offer up as there are so many. But if if we're me in that situation, I may have a folder in pocket for backup, but a fixed would be the go-to.

H&K Axis Folder
Spyderco Sage, Delica, Manix 2
Cold Steel Recon 1
Benchmade Mini or full size Griptilian

Look on the market place. A lot of good knives to choose from

Rat 2 is a heckuva knife for the $$.
What about a small fixed blade ? A BK11, add some scales and that would serve you well also.

Kershaw blur in Elmax all the way. Best 3 inch edc I've ever owned over the mini grip and Delica which combined are the top 3 compact modern edc's out there to me.

These three are all great knives but for your purposes the Delica's tip is prone to breaking off. It's my favorite of the three for slim carry. It is also the most difficult to one hand out of all them in comparison not that its hard to one hand.

In case you wear gloves the Blur also beats out the other two for deploying and closing one hand as well. For grippiness the handles beat the other two. The clips I find the Delica and Blur to be better. And for cleaning I would maybe edge that over to the Delica and Mini grip. The kicker is that you get Elmax for $100 even with the Blur. Elmax to me, takes a crazy edge like s35v and also keeps it a tad longer than 154cm and VG10. All are very good steels in just about the same class but the Elmax holds an edge longer. I have a strong affinity for the Delica. But for compact modern EDC's the Blur beats out every knife that I have carried and used from $30-$450. Bar none, it's my favorite knife.

It's just like the other two, you think it's a little ugly and goofy with the paneled grips, it's got a slight recurve. But all of it works once you get it in hand. The recurve helps you bite into rope on the rope and sharpens up using almost anything. It has a thicker blade stock and very nice edge grind as well.
