"The Damascus is Ironwood with Green Malachite inlay... I lengthened the handle material beyond the frame about an inch. This is buffed and polished only... no other finish.

The larger is Afzelia Burl with White turquoise and green malachite inlay... Mother of Pearl Fish... I used tung oil as a final finish."

Really nice work there! Did you do some plunge routing for the inlay? I'm still searching for small router bits for inlaying smaller knife handles.

Thanks.

The round pieces of inlay were done with a forstner bit and plug cutter.

The fish shape was done with knife by hand and with the assistance of a dremel and fine bits/cutters.

The banding of malachite/white turquoise was
done with band saw.

I cut my shaped inlay material with a band saw.

I enjoy shaped inlay but it can be frustrating... and I'm never satisfied with the results but I do see some improvement with each attempt.

Thanks for the response. I have a few fine bits for the dremel that I'll try out. The set of dremel router bits i have seem a bit big for fine detail work.

If i had a bandsaw i'd use it but don't have the space for that...have to resort to a coping/jewellers saw.

I haven't started yet, but imagine it could get frustrating. Do you leave the inlay piece a little thick and then sand it down to level?

There are a number of very tiny abrasive dremel bits you can pick up to carve the recess into the wood... they work well.

I cut my inlay with a band saw and have used a scroll saw as well.

Yes, I leave them thick then sand them smooth.

hey heavy,

you're the only guy i've seen edc'ing a carrillo. hows that knife holding up, if i may ask? is it as tough as it looks? sturdy? enough room for wear/tear?

do those black hex bolts hold up to rust? and do you know if carrillo has a warrantee on his knives?

Just finished this... It'll be my EDC for a while.

The wood is afzelia burl (sp) and the inlays are abalone (yes... buttons). I cut the file work on the back with a chainsaw file... and the cuts on the opposite with the dremel and abrasive disk... also did the blade thumb cuts with the dremel.

I ended up using a pocket clip from a larger knife (the big one in my other post), and reworked it to size and buffed it to chrome. (I'd hoped to make a clip out of wood, but could find nothing that would be rugged enough).

The bolsters were bead blasted and I brought them to the chrome appearance via much buffing. Finish is tung oil and buffed wax.

I enjoyed the file work... I'll be experimenting. My Inlay work... still isn't satisfactory to me... need more practice!!

I have only edc'ed it for less that a week so I can't speak as to how it holds up over a long period but it is rocking right now. :D

Tough as it looks? Ya I think so. Very solid everywhere. Solid lockup. Zero play. Room for wear on the lock yes.

I don't know if he has an express written warranty but I have dealt with him in the past and he is a stand up guy. I don't think there is any doubt that he would take care of you.
