EDC - What's in Your Pocket(s)??

Ozy,

I have a clasp knife just like yours, only thing is, it's about 50 years old!:D

It's more of a collector grade than real EDC use; It was packed with cosmoline for about a quarter of century, and it's very stiff to open. No rust whatsoever, though. Made by ABL, 1951.

Weird, because it is usually designated as 'British Army Clasp Knife' but it has a marlinspike...

What's the pointy thing in there and what's it used for?

It was typically found on Naval Clasp Knives for use with working knots out of rope on ships. It would also make a handy boot scraper, and would work with most any knots in rope, on or off shore ;)

Funnily, I dug up one in bushland about 15 years ago that could have been from that era, moving around, and not being the knife person I am today, helped me mis place it, and I had to have another.

I found it odd that it had the Marlin spike, in a '3 piece army clasp knife' but thought it'd come in use regardless.:D

A marlinspike is not just used for untying knots, its used for lots of different things in real seamanship, from laying marline, which is a way to fill the twists of rope before serving and parcelling them. Its used to pull on thin lines, you make a half hitch around it and use it as a handle to pull it tight.

you can also use it to pry open the lay of the rope in order to start a splice, you can use it trip certain snap shackles, to twist turnbuckle bodies to get something tight, to tighten chain shackles. all sorts of things,

Get a copy of Chapmans from the library and read it all.

UPS got it here just a little while ago. Eyed it for a while, lubed it and adjusted the pivot, and in the pocket it went.

Happy Thanksgiving All!!! Just getting home from work to start the 4 day holiday weekend... Should gear up and go do some deer hunting but think I will stay in and do some "honey-do" chores for Mrs,Baba...:D

Hi Ozy.
I love that knife! Who makes it?
Thanks,
Bryan

That would be a Les Voorhies Mini (not sure which size). I believe he still has some available.

I agree, that knife is awsome Ozy:thumbup:

Vivi, I am very jealous regarding your Spyderco dyad! Very Cool knife... What do you think of your G-10 Police? I am more than pleased with mine...Happy Turkey Day!!! ~baba~

I like the Police a lot. I think I still give the nod to my BG42 Military for ergos, light weight and material choices, but the Police has a thinner tip and grind which I prefer, 4 way clip, thinner handle so it carries quite well and I really like the blade shape of the Police.

The Dyad goes well with either one. The serrated blade does dirtier utility cutting for me so I don't dull up one of my main blades, and the PE blade is a nice alternative to pulling the Police or Military out in certain social situations where people might not react too favorably. :p
