a legal pistol? didn't even know they existed in the uk. I take it you're in the police/millitary line of work.

Yes.

There are over 30k of legal pistol holders in the country, including former police, military a security services, and then the same in NI with the addition of civil servants and the like.

hmmmm. and I thought pistol shooting was as good as dead over here. 30cm minimum length was what I understood (except for re-enactors) you learn something new every day.

Pistol shooting is dead, the figures I quote are for people who have a Sec 5 licence to have them as a PPW.

I thought that self defense was (for all intensive purposes) illegal in the UK?

the Legal term used is "reasonable force". what constitutes reasonable force is down to the courts, and so, for the most part, the jury. because "society" doesn't approve of violence, juries seem to tend to find people guilty of using unreasonable force for using any weapon. weapons are allmost universaly illegal to carry, unless you are serving in the millitary/police/"security services" and are on duty or (it would seem) are off duty/have retired/left, but may still be in danger, for example if a police officer/soldier had been involved in operations that brought them into contact with serious violent criminal groups/terrorist groups, especialy the IRA (who unlike the more recent crop of terrorist groups, would fairly happily attend to someone personaly)
even then, you may come up against considerable difficulties in showing your innocense if you are forced to use a firearm to defend yourself, as you would be up agaisnt jurors the same as anyone else.
