EDC XIII Which knife or knives are you carrying today?

Range day!

Have fun! I need to get out and do some shooting, but I’m stockpiling what ammo I have. I “roll my own”, and it still isn’t cheap.

So while I was a bit disappointed that my Swiss Border Guard was kinda slow out the dealer's door at three full business days, I was pleased to see it on its last, local leg early this morning, over the bridge on its way to my PO. I pocketed my StarTac today as it's also an all-Ti knife of similar size with a harpoon blade and picked up the Klotzli around mid-day while running a few errands around town. Mako109 Mako109 's third pic at his previous post shows his StarTac and Starkosi to be really close in size to the SBG and indeed its blade and the 'Zaan's are about as identical in length as they could be.

I'm really pleased with the knife for overall quality, F&F, appearance, and fit in hand. The blade grinds and polished stonewash finish are outstanding and it came out of the box with a wicked sharp, consistent, and refined factory edge. While some have mentioned some initial stiffness to the action, I didn't find it too bad as it flicked out fairly easily on the first try. I didn't quite free drop on release, though, even after a couple drops of oil, so I backed the pivot off just a few degrees and re-tightened in tiny increments. Now it closes freely just like a broken-in AXIS lock knife and is still dead-centered with no blade play

I do have a couple nitpicks about the knife which I'll take a little time to digest before sharing, but I'm quite happy with my new acquisition. As Sharp & Fiery Sharp & Fiery suggested, it is indeed right up my alley. :)

Excellent. I see you have put a lanyard on it...means its a keeper?
I’m curious to your nitpicks, as I have a couple too, which is the reason I don’t own one yet.

For a little over two years I have been looking for a school administrator job. I have applied to over 100 available and have interviewed for several. I have been offered a couple jobs but none of them have been a good match. Finally, when I was beginning to lose hope, I found what appeared to be the perfect job. After a couple interviews they offered me the job!! I immediately accepted the job offer and what I thought was a fair salary. Apparently though they reconsidered.......and decided I was worth more to them, so they offered me an additional $10k over the amount we already agreed to. So...... I decided to treat myself to my first CRK.

Congratulations for the the new job, and great CRK.

Congratulations on your SBG! Hope you will enjoy yours as much as I enjoy mine.

My only nitpick right now is their use of proprietary pocket clip screws that are soft and difficult to remove. I'm trying to replace it with a custom deep pocket carry clip. The screws are neither imperial nor metric and I have nothing else that fits. Current waiting for the delivery of an ip5 Torx Plus bit suggested by Barman1 Barman1 . I know it's not going to be a perfect fit, but hope it helps in backing those screws out.

When I received my first small Sebenza a month or so ago my initial reaction was that it was an extremely well made, function driven knife. I liked it very much, but to be honest, the initial “Wow!” factor just wasn’t there.

In all honesty, going in I think I had a slight bias against CRK...in part because of their popularity. I tend to prefer the road less traveled, but at the end of the day I realized their reputation was likely well deserved and I decided to give the small 31 a shot.

It wasn’t until I actually began carrying and using the knife that I came to appreciate the finer details; the incredibly tight tolerances, the finish (particularly under extremely close scrutiny), the ergonomics and the overall quality of construction. It was a delayed reaction, but I eventually had one of those “Damn, I really effin’ love this knife!” moments.

I didn’t have any immediate plans to purchase any more knives. I’ve been on a bit of a bender for the past few months, and I really needed to slow things down.

But the best laid plans always seem to have a way of biting me in the ass. Early this week I stumbled upon a “Unique Graphic” version of the small 31. I hadn’t seen many of this particular design out there, but the damn thing just started screaming at me the moment our eyes met. “Slow down” be damned....this one had my name written all over it.

Anyway, it arrived this morning and has been in my pocket all day. I still can’t find much info or pics for this particular graphic, so I’m guessing it wasn’t one of the more popular designs.

Regardless, I’m really diggin’ it. Seems like CRK has won me over....but that probably doesn’t come as a surprise to anyone here.

Apologies for the long-ass lead in and backstory to this one. For what it’s worth, if you’ve read all this I truly appreciate it. Personally, I enjoy hearing why folks are carrying/buying the knives they post....but I get why many wouldn’t, and I realize this may not be the proper venue for my ramblings.

Finally, a few pics from throughout the day. Hope everyone has a terrific Friday night!

Really? Does that sorry little strand of paracord with a crimped piece of metal on it look like one of my lanyards? ;) SBG's all come with that pathetic blue tail.

Anyway, the thing that got me almost right away is the detent resistance is kinda weak when closed and if one is not careful when pulling the knife out of pocket, the prominent thumb studs well away from the handle can catch on the inner seam and partially open the blade. I already poked myself on the sharp, pointy tip and am currently wearing a bandaid on my right middle finger. Of, course, now that I know I'll be more mindful and likely won't injure myself again. I do have other knives that can open similarly.

The other thing is the screws. They look more like hex sockets with the corners relieved than Torx, but after using a WS2.5 metric hex to loosen the pivot with force and having it gall a bit, I tried both Torx Plus, which didn't fit at all, then T8, which was a nice snug fit for both the pivot and body screws, but the receivers seem to lack the inner engagement lobes. I can't find anything to fit the stupidly tiny clip screws. Is there some type of Euro screw I'm unfamiliar with?

Despite my nitpicks, I do expect it is a keeper. I have other knives that I like very well despite a flaw or two and don't ever really think of unloading them. After all, nothing's perfect anyway and the attitude that something should be so just 'coz it cost x amount strikes me as nonsensical. While it is "right up my alley" it also has some interesting features different than my other knives and is overall a very well made and striking piece.

I wouldn't have messed with the clip screws if I hadn't been asked for advice on the bit size, glad I did though.
They are an odd size, 1-72. (Got them from Knifekits)
Initially I removed them with a Torx Plus size 5, it was a little sloppy but they came out.
I sized the screws and reinstalled waiting for the new screws to arrive.
They arrived today and I got one screw out but the other head just stripped.
I literally have hundreds of bits around and finally found a worn T-6 that I could force fit and the screw came loose.
New screws are T-6, fit perfectly and I'm a lot happier knowing the screws will last the life of the knife.
I should grab a few hundred and ship them to Klotzli lol.;)
