They're an alternative to a nail nick, pull, stud, etc. -- another way to get purchase on the blade to open it.

correct, here's my first try at it on a scrap blade yesterday
you can make them flush on one side or protruding on both.

Ahh! Ok thank you. I have seen these before. For some reason I didn’t realize that is what it was in the first pic.

I had no idea this feature had a specific name.
