Autumn vibes...

Try a background in the red/orange color range. I tried to get a copper Ripple to photograph right against different backgrounds, and that worked pretty well. For some reason, copper and copper alloys pick up the colors around them better than anything else.

See if you can get it under some "warmer" light, too. Think regular incandescant bulbs, something with a yellow tint around 2,000 to 3,000 K

Sorry for posting three pics of the same knife guys but it's really hard getting the natural copper patina to photograph well and the colors just amaze me.

Sweet, thanks for the tips! Yea copper sure is a challenge. I'll try experimenting with different background colors, good thinking. I never really thought about the color of the background making a difference, just so long as the background looked nice. I try to take all my knife pictures outside. I find that for my phone it takes much better pictures in natural light. All these pics were taken outside. I also really like to take pics at that strange hour just before sunset when you get that kind of altered hue to the light. With the rainy season coming I might have to get some sort of indoor lighting situation going on though haha.

That hour before sunset is a thing in the film industry, it's called the "golden hour". I guess it's for basically the same reasons. When the sun is straight overhead, you get amazing color rendering, but you also get a lot of glare, and really sharp, high-contrast shadows. With the sun closer to the horizon, colors get "warmed up", with more reds and yellows in them, and shadows kind of trail off, like the light when you go into a cave.

One thing that's worked for me is to be near a window on one side, and an incandescent bulb on the other side, with my knife as close as possible to right in the middle. Or, I'll have the knife between me and the light bulb, then the window off to my right or left.

Photographing knives is harder because you can get ugly glare off the blade, and it pretty much ruins the photo. I'll move a knife as many as four times while looking at my camera, to find an angle I'm happy with.
