The new range showed up around mid-day and we had it in place by late afternoon. There's something about even simple, straightforward appliance install that always seem to be more trouble and take longer than it should, though it all came out fine in the end and we're pleased with the new stove. Putting tools away in the truck and shop I got some pics of the Quantum Ursus NL I carried. As it's Wood Wednesday, here's it is with its rosewood inlays up against the pine and spruce of my wrench tray...

...and in the shop, on the UniSaw table on a test scrap of red cedar...

...on whatever was the flavor of the day for "mahogany" at the time this was bought (meranti, I think)...

...and on some nice remaindered Douglas fir sub-flooring/ceiling material from a job my son was lead carpenter on up in P-Town.

I've been carrying this Opinel #7 for the last few days. $16. Nothing pretty about it. It just works. And it weighs just over an ounce, so you hardly notice that it's in your pocket. I've become an Opinel fan. It's not going to replace my CRKs, but it's going to get used alot.

Unless you start carrying around an Opinel No.13 around they're just so light. The thin, slicey blade is also ideal for that cutting things that knives are apparently used for... I'm often carrying my Opinel Slim No. 15 around the yard for cutting surplus fruit in half for the chickens. The No. 8 is the perfect hiking companion for anyone doing the ultralight hiking thing or at least trying to incorporate elements of ultralight backpacking into their multiple day hikes. It's not what I'd want for carving on wood, but it's great for any other camp activities.
