Benchmade 490 Arcane. I wanted one of these for a long time. I could never quite get myself to pull the trigger at $270.
I kept an eye on eBay until one came up at something more reasonable. This one came up for $140. Buy it Now. Not much description, but the seller said that everything worked right, and it appeared to be in decent shape.
It arrived about a week later, in kind of sad shape: the blade was dull. The clip was missing, and it was full of pocket lint. The previous owner probably decided it makes better pocket knife than a knife to be carried on a clip.
Not only was it dull, but the factory grind was pretty steep. This was going to be a bear to re-sharpen with that S90V steel.
Because it was not only dull, but also missing the clip and dirty inside, I decided to just send it in to Benchmade, and have them do the work. They sent me emails when they got it, started working on it, and shipped it back. I had it back two weeks from when I sent it out.
It has a shallower primary grind now, which I’m also happy about. Excellent service! I should feel a little guilty, since I’m not the original owner, but I figure the original owner paid the high price that bankrolls this service.
The knife itself has a very ergonomic shape, although the mat finished aluminum handles are not grippy at all. It will make a good knife for office carry. I like the spring-assisted flipper action; the tab is very unobtrusive. It feels like an automatic, but without the “automatic tax.”
I’m going to put a 40° micro bevel on it with a Sharpmaker and call it a day.
Sorry for the wall of text, but this was a grail of mine. Thanks for bearing with me.
