Time for another change . . . swapped out my plain Ti iMamba for my Shiro Ursus today.

It's the 1st time I'll be carrying the Shiro.

The iMamba was ok. It was the 1st that I carried it too. I'm not selling it but frankly, compared to other similarly priced knives in my collection, I wasn't all that impressed with it. 🤷‍♂️

I think this is my favorite 550 I've ever seen. I love the scales. Are they G11? Where did you get them?
Well thanks! As to the 550 part, I felt lucky to pick up an HG 154CM in like-new condition on the exchange after BMK switched that model to flat ground S30V. I don't have a problem with the steel change, although I like that 154CM is easier to sharpen, but the hollow grind is a much better slicer and cardboard cutter on a Benchmade saber grind than the flat.

The scales are from American expat Kevin Wilkins Kevin Wilkins who made them for both large and small Griptilians for many years in his Berlin, Germany workshop. I have four sets of them--two in coarse black G10 for a large/small Ritter pair, an aluminum set with one of Kevin's hand-ground replacement blades (similar to a 550, though flat-ground with an oval hole), and the knife I just posted which is indeed G11. Kevin listed that one as "Coyote" though I believe it's simply natural G11. He had a red G11 set on sale years ago that had a beautiful translucence to it that I always regretted passing up.

Unfortunately, Kevin is no longer making replacement scales as the market for his excellent work kinda dried up and he's concentrating on full knives and other projects now. He had his remaindered scale stock for sale for some time, but that's all gone now. He does still have a few Enduras--complete knives with Spyderco blades, guts, and his replacement scales and backspacer--available on his website. He's got some of his personally built knives there too and he's also offering an updated and more affordable version of his Leafstorm 8 which is being built by a quality Chinese maker which you can see here.

I originally bought a set of flame-anodized Ti scales from Kevin for the 550 that it wore for a while, but picked up the G11's and sold the Ti scales to DocJekl DocJekl who may someday actually install them on a knife 😏 and give them life again here at BF.

It's the inlays on the imamba that do it for me. Mammoth tooth 🤤
