EDC XIII Which knife or knives are you carrying today?

I’m finding it’s just too much work at the moment to get to my knives in order to swap things up every day, so I’ve stayed with this one all weekend…

But on that note, here’s something I’m kinda excited about so I figured I’d share it here. I mean, if not with you guys…..who am I gonna talk to about it?

As I’ve mentioned ad nauseam, we’re nearing the end of a home renovation from hell. We’re downsizing to a condo here in preparation for spending summers in the mountains, so space is gonna be a little tighter than we’re used to.

Since my wife wants to keep working I had to concede the den at the new place. She’s also the type who comes home and spills folders, receipts, paperwork and anything else that tends to get stuck to her throughout the day all over the kitchen counters, tables etc….so it wasn’t so much a “concession” on my part but rather a practical necessity. I’m a neat freak with OCD (clinically diagnosed and fairly well managed), so giving her a den to spread out in will hopefully be a win-win.

Anyway, in return for the den I get to design the garage (flooring, built-in cabinetry, workbench etc). But that was gonna break my way regardless, so I negotiated for something I’ve been wanting to do for years now.

We have an out-of-the way corner in the master bedroom that was just gonna be wasted space, so I’m having a knife/watch storage and display cabinet being built-in to match our bedroom furniture.

Got the preliminary renderings yesterday. Eight drawers with custom trays that can be stacked if necessary which should easily house most of my knives. The valet area will hold my watch display box and the glass-front cabinet above will showcase select knives and such. LED lighting will be recessed into routed channels throughout for ambiance and to spotlight certain areas. What I haven’t decided on yet is whether or not to light the drawers. Overkill…..or hard yes?

So I’m pretty darn amped to see this particular project come to fruition. I’ve got time to make some tweaks to the design, so if anyone has ideas feel free to let me know.

Thanks for letting me share, like I said….ain’t nobody in the real world who has any interest in this whatsoever, aside from the designer/builder I’m giving my left nut and only son to as a down payment. Still need to steal like 40 cows and pull off a major-league jewelry heist, but that’s a story for another day.

It should be bigger…got to have room for future knives and watches…

Lol, I wish I could go bigger but I’m lucky to be getting this little corner area. By my calculations it should hold between 300 to 500 folders and fixed blades if I use a stackable tray in some of the drawers.

One idea that got shot down was to have the whole unit on hidden hinges so it could swing out from the wall to reveal a recessed gun safe behind it. It also backs up to my closet, so I thought having another “pass-through” set of shelves behind it that could be accessed from my closet would be cool….but I had to draw the line somewhere. Plus, with what this renovation is costing I don’t see a lot of new knives in my immediate future. Lol, in fact I may be having a forced liquidation sale. Keep an eye on the sales corner for some Black Friday deals, haha.

Lol, I did manage to get a large flush mount wall mirror in the bedroom that slides open to reveal a hidden, recessed gun/knife safe. Kinda James Bond-ish, but I think it’s got my contractor a bit stumped. I have a feeling I’ll be doing the install myself on that one.

Worst case scenario I just use the refrigerator for new additions. It’ll probably be empty for a little while anyway.
