EDC XIII Which knife or knives are you carrying today?

A few days ago I had a little back and forth posting with palonej palonej about his BMK 665 and his remarking on its similarity to the 861. That got my Barrage out and into my pocket after putting away the three that I carried over Christmas and into yesterday. Joe's 861 sports really interesting custom scales while mine is more modestly modded--de-assisted, lock and backspacer removed with standoffs in their place, along with replacement black screws added to the bright bolsters and black thumb studs to the blade. It's not a light knife by any means at 5.25 oz, but it's not terribly butt heavy with its balance point toward the rearward end of the bright aluminum bolsters, its generously drilled out liners helping to lighten the handle.

Decided to fix a chip on my Beautiful Bear&son that it came with free of charge from the dealer and or factory. Fortunately it’s an absolute beautiful example without that exception. Next up my A.Wright that’s smooth but less then desirable. Couldn’t think of a better time then Christmas night after a few egg nogs and cold beverages 😳😆
I have the same set up and today with a large stockman at 20 degrees the stone was taking jaw metal off. Looks like you set the blade spine in the back of the jaws per directions. Does not appear you have a problem with the stone removing jaw metal. Do you always use 25 degrees or base angle on blade?
Thanks

I’ve been carrying this little guy since a few days before we left Georgia. There’s a little knife shop in downtown Blue Ridge. It’s actually the first and only knife shop I’ve ever been in….and now it’ll probably be my first stop every time we roll into town, lol.

The shop has a decent selection of Case, Benchmade, Kershaw, CRKT etc. along with an array of swords and “tourist grade” knives. Much to my surprise I also stumbled upon a few custom fixed blades made by a local resident of Blue Ridge, Jeff McCullough.

As a big fan of small, easy to pocket fixed-blades this amber jigged bone and Alabama Damascus “Fingerling” model immediately caught my eye….as did several other larger models. I spoke with the shop owner and handled the knife for a bit, mentioning that with just a few days until Christmas I wasn’t really there to buy anything…..but I let him know I really liked the knife and was stoked to stumble upon his shop. The idea of buying knives made locally was also extremely appealing to me.

So long story short; we celebrated Christmas on the 23rd. Our son was only able to get a few days off work and had to head back to Florida on Christmas Eve. Apparently my wife…having overheard the conversation I’d had with the shop owner….had darted back into town the following morning while I was still sleeping and picked up the knife for me. It’s the first and only blade she’s ever bought me, which alone makes it very special. It’s also the first “locally made” knife I’ve ever owned, and while I haven’t met the maker yet I’m hoping to do so in the very near future. I dunno, for some reason it just adds a little extra pizzazz to the way the knife fits into my collection….and I see myself adding more of Jeff’s knives (along with other local maker’s work) as a new way to expand my enjoyment of the hobby.

Hope that kinda makes sense? More importantly, I hope everyone had a very Merry Christmas and is having a wonderful holiday season!

It’s a new setup I normally use my Edge-pro but it depends on the blade and if I’m re-profiling or not. I’ll also use a black sharpie to see were the stone is hitting and then adjust the angle accordingly so it’s from the edge back and then change it if I want a secondary bevel . But for the few knives Ive done with this setup 25 to 26 degrees seems to do the trick .i also found that with 400 grit or lower on this setup the stones want to jump around so using super light pressure and it helps. This is my first dry stone sharpener other then it leaving less of a mess I prefer wet stones .
