EDC XIII Which knife or knives are you carrying today?

My buddy called today looking for a knife for his son who's just begun as a First Year Cadet at Mass Maritime. I've gifted my friend a couple knives as he first worked on jobs under and for me 25 years ago, he's done so on and off, and we've helped each other out a lot over the years. He always carries, though he's not a knife guy per se, but he hoped I could sell him something "not expensive" but like the 551-1702 I gave him when he helped me out with my roof. It also had to be under 4" closed to satisfy the school's restriction, which seems an odd criterion.

That rules out a lot of what I've got. I wanted to just give him something anyway and started looking through what I might be able to come up with. I got a couple AXIS lock knives out just to check sizes. Ritter mini-Grip with Wilkins scales? Size is right but it's discontinued at both ends, basically irreplaceable, and not inexpensive. Not parting with that. AO mini-Barrage in 154CM is small enough too, but it was a gift from my wife. That stays here. Then I thought about the console knife that went from the old Escape and into the new Charger last fall. It's a Kershaw RJ Martin designed blacked out 1987, an AO flipper in 8CR13MOV that's the right size that was comped me in the Exchange deal for the 551-1 I bought to replace 551-1702 I gifted my buddy. That's full circle. Hmm.

Only problem was that I after I got it out of the car, cleaned it up and lubed it, I kinda liked it--real snappy and it's a good fit for a spare "car knife". I kept it. In the end, I found a clean blacked-out, combo edge Gerber Paraframe (7CR17 steel?) in a drawer. I broke it down to get its Teflon washers clean and lubed with TriFlow, got it nicely centered with no play, thread-locked the pivot, and put a nice edge on it. It's really not a bad little, aggressive-looking, thirty-dollar piece and my buddy says his son will love it.

So what did I carry today? Well the two that were never going anywhere--the Ritter getting a fresh edge too--and the Kershaw that's going back in the console tomorrow. Never did get a pic of the Gerber....
