EDC?

Will this knife be available in a left hand version? I doubt it. But I LOVE my small lefty custom Apogee. It is one sweet little knife!

Scott Dog,
I only saw this knife for about 20 seconds and am not quite sure but I think that the opening stud could be turned around for lefties. Will? Darrel?

Carl;
I didn't reject the design out of hand. I said that from what I could tell, the design looked pretty good. I just said that I wished that they would have gone with a little better steel. The Calypso Jr. was only one example out of many possible.
I also said that I would be interested in seeing one when they become available.

I wonder how 420HC stacks up to 12C27(425M)? Are they similar to 440A?
12C27 is the material being used in the OE Paragee, I believe. Two similar designs (I know, different shape, blade), by the same designer, being introduced by two different companies at the same time, and presumably with similar prices. Seems like they'll be in direct competition with each other, and maybe blade steel could be a deciding factor for some people.

Really, I don't think that most people use a knife as a heavy-duty tool, and if they do, they'll be spending more than fifty or sixty bucks, anyway. I think that, but I have always looked to more expensive, "better" steel for my own use. On the other hand, I've never given the cheaper steels a chance to see how they perform, so can't comment on them. I found Steve Harvey's comparison of the production and handmade ArcLites very interesting, and the average person may be very happy with the performance of 420HC.

I'd sworn that I was just going to buy a few customs this year, since I've got more production knives than I need, but will probably have to get all the Darrel Ralph collaborations to ease the pain of waiting for the "real ones" to get here. The 420V and 420HC will be a step up and down for me, respectively (most of my folders are ATS-34/154CM, and a couple in ATS-55 though the most recent was M2). It will be interesting to see just how big those steps are when it comes to actual use.

Camillus has some very specific competition in mind for the EDC, the Spyderco Delica II (AUS6 blade) for example. The EDC should be a reasonable alternative in the niche it is aimed at.

I just think 420HC is great in a $20 knife, but in a $50 knife? I don't know. The clipit Delica has an ATS-55 blade for $49.95 or so. The EDC will be a classier package than the Delica, and for folks that put class ahead of edge holding in a small pocket folder? Who knows.

First off I would like to apologize to Will & Darrel if they thought I was attacking the EDC regarding form or function - my intent was looking at it from a marketing standpoint since many people may think 420J when they see 420HC & they are completely different animals. I have no doubts that the EDC is going to be first-rate in execution & function but I think many people not familiar with Camillus's 420HC will associate with other less capable 420's and reject the knife outright, especially with other knives in that price range with similar frame materials & ATS-34, 154CM, ATS-55, ACUTO 440, 12C27 etc. blades that are better known steels. It is such a good design that it would be a shame if it didn't do well due to people's unfamiliarity with the qualities of Camillus's 420HC & associated it with lesser quality steels.

OK guys,
I 've been gone to SHOTSHOW for awhile, so let me try to catch up!

First to directly answer Scott Dog, the EDC does feature ambi thumbstuds. IT does not, however come in a true, mirror image lefty version. We may address that in the future, but after reviewing our CUDA Quick Action lefty sales for last year, it will be hard to justify a separate lefty model. We'll have to see.

To eveyone else questioning blade steel and price point, I answered this at lenght in another thread at...

http://www.bladeforums.com/ubb/Forum21/HTML/000518.html

Keep in mind, that most of the internet sites that have orders already in for this knife have talked about selling it for $49.95 -$55. So if you wnat to compare prices, compare apples to apples.

Also, the pics original shown here, feature an early prototype. A more recent pic shows the nicely beveled edges of the steel frame.....

Also, the blades on the production models will feature tumble polished blades instead of the satin finish shown. Very attractive!

Please let me know if there are any other questions I can answer, and as always, thanks foir the interest!

Okay, seems like there's a lot of interest amongst us Knife Knuts in an EDC with upgraded steel. Seems like one of those interested is some guy named Mike Turber

You can take apart the EDC, but with the open style construction, and with all the slots in the handles, I'm not sure if it would be needed. I can't remember the size of the screw heads holding together the knife, but I do remember the clip is held on by 3 T6 TORX screws.
