EDC'ing a Fixed Blade. How do you?

so, i love fixed blades. i pretty much hate any folding knife.

problem is... i can never seem to figure out a convenient/easy/decent way to EDC a fixed blade. I've got me a few striders and a TOPS. I just can't carry one.

When i used a teklok, it means i have to be wearing a belt. i still want my knife when i'm running, for my pajamas, or just when i'm lounging around the apt. plus, having that knife on my belt is obtrusive and imprints against my shirt.

I've tried an IWB clip that i made, which worked out quite well. problem is, it leaves my knife inaccessable/slow when it's tucked away so tight.

But enough of that. How do you EDC a fixed blade? How is it working out for you?

Have a Barry Dawson 3" fixed blade with a kydex sheath that makes it sit low in my pocket. Also have a Graham Brothers 2.5" fixed blade with a similar kydex sheath. My untucked shirt or jacket will cover the handle. If I really wanted to cover them more I could carry them inside my pants waistband.

Neck knife is a great idea also, a shoulder holster would work. I'll try and send a few links later some of which were in BDF.

the Hideaway Knife is a good product to EDC if it's legal where you are. You can clip in on to an undershirt where it hangs, convenient and secure.

I currently EDC a CRKT fixed Falcon with a 2.5" blade. It is held in a thin Kydex sheath (which I don't really care for), and it either clips behind my belt over the watch pocket of my jeans, or I wear it as a neck knife. Perhaps a neck knife is the way for you.

I also like fixed blades much more than folders, but keep in mind that a good folding knife is indispensible in certain situations. Have you considered having a shoulder rig made for your fixed blade? For a while I was carrying a Ka-Bar in a rig that suspended the knife upside-down in a diagonal position across my back. After that, I carried a fixed blade (in the sheath) tucked into the waistband of my pants. Just recently, I was carrying a 7.5" (OAL) Solingen knife in my boot.

There are many ways to carry a fixed-blade. Research them, and find the one that works best for you.

I carry a folder and a fixed blade to work. Since I work in nice clothes I have had my share of problems trying to carry the fixed blade in dockers and collared shirts. The two I alternate between are my TOPS scalpel and Benchmade Activator LE - The TOPS has a great rotating kydex sheath system. I bolted an old cell phone belt clip to the outside loop of my Activator sheath. This achieves full swivel (not loosely either) and inside-the-pants carry. I wear them both that way. The trick is tucking in the shirt w/out it showing. Luckily the TOPS has a gap between the sheath and the swivel which allows the shirt to neatly tuck into what appears to be the pants. The BM setup works the same way. Being in Information Technology I have found the scalpel is a little aggressive looking so I prefer the Activator since the initial thrill of the TOPS has faded. Sorry for the ramble.

I just use a belt sheath and have had no comfort problems. But I wear jeans and a belt all of the time. For clothes with no belt loop, I'd go with a neck knife... but I am glad I don't have to.

In a leather or kydex sheath with a metal clip (like on a cellular phone case). The sheath needs to be high ride, with the entire handle above the waist.

Personally, I carry a Spyderco Ronin around my neck whenever I'm not in the shower. I also usually carry a CRKT Kasper/Polkowski Companion in 'appendix' carry. It is very comfortable for me while standing, sitting, bending, etc.. You may want to try to rig such a clip system for one of your knives. In my experience, it's both inobtrusive, and quick to draw from. Then again, I may have more 'concealment tissue' than you do. :D

A "strong side" carry IWB looped fix blade should certainly be faster then a folder, folded and in the pocket? It is for me anyway. I do IWB and also I do in teh boot as well as the occasional neck knife. They all work pretty well. Maybe you just need a different knife, something smaller perhaps or lighter?

I have 3 fixed blades that I EDC.Ka-Bar impact spear point,Ka-Bar impact warthog and my Fallkniven F1.I'm a night owl so I don't see many people however I do wear a lot of baggy hoodies that partially covers my sheaths.

I too prefer fixed blades, however, I do not EDC anything. But when I do carry a knife, I find that one of Bob Dozier's smaller utility knives rides well on my belt in one of his kydex cross draw sheaths. It is very unobtrusive and extremely comfortable. The knife in sheath is small enough that I also find I can slip it into the pocket of my shorts and carry it that way if I do not have a belt on.

I also prefer a fixed blade, and have been EDCing one for years. Here is how I carry mine. You can also carry IWB.

This is the same as Halfneck is talking about.

I wouldn't say I EDC a fixed blade but have often carried an Erwin Roach 6 3/4" 'Little Buddy' in one of his horizontal carry snap sheaths with no problem.

Questions for two of the folks posting here...

Gfarrell: I've also got an Activator and work in a khakis-and-collars environment, so your setup is pretty interesting to me. Can you post a picture taken of it "in use", or do you not see any of the knife when it's being worn? I'm thinking that a similar setup would allow me to carry it in my pocket without being visible, save for the clip.

Grahamknives: Have you ever spoken to a LEO about whether your "Pocket Fixed Blade" system is considered "concealed"? Personally, I think that if you can see the knife without special training, it's not "concealed", but that's me. Also, do you make such sheaths for knives from other makers?

well.. it can't be lighter or smaller because that's the reason why i like fixed blades! a opt for striders, so we're talking everything either .165" or .25" thick and 3-4" long.

but regardless... i find it faster to deploy folders because my hands are normally by my pockets. so when i need a knife my hand is usually right there, and with my waved endura, deployment is a snap!

on the other hand, when i carry something IWB i have to reach up and back to grab the knife. if i'm wearing an untucked shirt or a jacket or hoodie, then i have to pull up my shirt and find my knife. if i'm wearing my messenger bag... forget about it.

i do understand what you're saying though.

How about a neck knife??

well.... no...

i mean, how is that fast or a reliable method to carry? every time i need to grab my knife i gotta reach under my shirt. and every time i put it away, i have to use two hands-- one to hold the sheath and the other to push the knife in.

if i carry it outside my shirt... that's not discrete at.

shoulder holster, i can see a little, but only discreet if i'm wearing a jacket.
