EDCs--how much is too much?

I usually EDC;

Al Mar SERE 2000
Spyderco Military PE(occasionally in EDC rotation)
Leatherman Charge XTi
Old Timer 960
Spyderco Jester on keychain
Spyderco Mini-Police necklace(occasionally)

Sometimes I wonder if I'm overdoing it a bit since I'm sure that my SERE could handle anything that I throw at it, but I think that it's more of having the right knife for the job. The SERE is mainly for SD/survival use, the XTi for work chores and the Old Timer is for food/fruit cutting. With these EDCs, I think that I have all my bases covered. :D

In your opinion, how many knives would you think is too many?

Let's see..my daily EDC total.

1. Benchmade 732BT or Buck 110 PCS (depending on my mood).
2. Victorinox Fieldmaster or Copperhead slipjoint (again mood).
3. Vic. SAK Classic on 1 keyring.
4. Wegner Classic on the other.

So that's at at least 4 all the time, with a Ka-Bar Dozier in my offhand front pocket sometimes for fun.

So you sound fine to me....of course we both could be crazy????

My edc rotation has been narrowed some lately, but here goes:

1. BM 732D2SBT
2. Spyderco Lum Chinese
3. Spyderco DElica SS CE
4. Vic Cybertool
5. 1992ish BM Eclipse ATS-34

Edit....this is my rotation, I dont carry these all at once.......

depends on the context. if we're talking folders only, then i think 2 is too much. personally i really don't get it when people say they carry like 7 folders at the same time......

now, if this is about a well thought out carry-setup for outdoor-adventuring and such, then someone carrying a folder, a multitool, a fixed blade and a hand-axe is well-equipped. (ok, he could leave the hatchet at home if his fixed blade is heavy enough..... )

i don't think you should count in miniature necklace-knives or keychain-knives. those are just back-up stuff or jewellery, in some way.

but hearing that you actually carry an AMK SERE2000 + Spyderco Military + LM Charge + OldTimer 960 all at the same time sounds pretty silly to me; not even to mention the excess bulk you're walking around with. all you need on you is 1 folder, really......

am i missing something here or am i just 'normal'?

Hey, its a free country but I usually laugh at the pics posted on EDC threads... 2 pistols, 4+ knives, 3+ flashlights, 2 multitools, first aid kit, survival kit, etc.... I couldn't stand carrying that much crap around. I think its more of being a "gear geek" than it is about need.

Too many is when you go to jump out of a chair and don't move because of the weight.

I see three categories:
1. Big knife
2. Small knife
3. Tool.

If you have all three, you are heavy, but maybe sane.
If you duplicate and you are not going into the field, then I admire your insanity.
;)

My EDC is a SOG PowerLock and SAK Farmer or Spyderco CalyJr.
If I'm carrying the farmer, the SOG stays in a bag. If I carry the CalyJr, then the SOG is on-board as well.

My other EDC (Backup) is a SAK CyberTool 41 and an LM Crunch.

1) CRKT M16-14
2) Tinker (Vic)
3) SOG Powerlock

If I can't do it with these then I should not be doing it!! I may be nut's but I like it!! And I think to much is when you need a pair of farmer jeans, a belt and maybe some spenders!! Kidding.................maybe?

Please take a look at this mammoth thread on EDCs-

EDC - What's in Your Pocket(s)?? (linked)

with well over 1,000 posts and 100,000 views - spanning over 50 pages.

(Please do add your EDCs to that thread - as it is a useful repository/resource)

It's just all a matter of individual choice -
as you can see from that thread there are plenty of people who carry a LOT more than you,
just as there are quite a few "minimalists".

With the caveat that I work in a conservative office environment, I always have a big folder, which over the years has included the Cuda Maxx, AFCK, and Skirmish, and a Leatherman Wave, which I still think is the king and reigning champion of all multitools.

The Wave has a small plain edge clip with a very good point and a serrated sheepsfoot blade. Don't really need a different small knife on top of that.

i always think that the point of an edc was to have a knife that works good in all situations, and then when youre "out on a mission", then carry five knives.

I normally carry these
Big knife: CS Pro Lite or Buck 110
Multi Tool: LM Supertool 200 and/or LM Juice Kf4
old slipjoint
little knife:Spyderco Dragonfly
Spyderco Spydercard in wallet

So I think that when EDC gets over five knives it's starting to be too much, atliest for me.

I have a sebenza in my pocket and something else IWB thats very lightweight and easy to forget about

1. Leatherman Wave
2. Benchmade 960
3. Leatherman Micra in my keychain.
4. MagLite Solitaire also in keychain
Sometimes also my tool adapter for my Wave.

If your pants aren't falling down, then you aren't carrying too many.
It's a simple system in my opinion.

On average, I'll edc
1: Spyderco/Bob Lum folding tanto OR BM 710
2: Spyderco Endura
3: Spyderco/Bob Lum tanto (on belt) OR Cold Steel SRK OR glock Field knife. (depends who I'm trying to impress.)
4: If in a dress shirt, a SOG Twitch 1.

I may have a classic pink swiss army knife at any time.

I wonder what nut case started that thread, probably carries a customized SAK or something...

My advice for evaluating EDC is to think about the purpose for each piece of equipment, then cary only as much as will best do those jobs. Sounds very reasonable, until -> then think about what other jobs are being overlooked, then repeat.

Too much is enough to make you uncomfortable. Anything less is perfectly legit.

My EDC:

Camillus Aftermath
Rob Simonich Bitteroot (Talonite)
Spyderco Spyderench (w/serrated blade)
Victorinox CyberTool 41

Each does things that the others can't. In combination they handle all of my daily needs and provide a reserve of capability for emergencies.
